Is this the calibre of our ambassadors?
by Nick Fauzier on Mar 29, 2012 03:11 PM  | Hide replies

There is more to language than just getting things done. As M wrote in an earlier comment its a way of integrating with another culture, but also exercising your own brain. Once technology can do all this and more the ambassador should just go to sleep for rest of his life and let mobile phones and gadgets do his work. I am sure at least in this case they will do a better job :)

Article writer is very unintelligent, artificial and lack human sensibility.

Learning a Language is an human endeavor born out of love and passion to associate with culture and history along with a society.
Its not for moronic robot like artificial robots.

Agree. Transalation via smartphones is useful for tourists, businessmen or software professionals. But no good for diplomats. For an ambassador to be overwhelmed by this is means that he is too impressionable by technology.

I think he meant Urdu. Urdu is a mix of Hindi - which did come from Sanskrit - and Persian

Yes we do have many trnslation software that helps people to understand an un learnt language. It helps mostly to translat it from known language to unknown language but what about from unkown language to known. That is a trick I think. Still need to learn a langauge to unpack many things.

People can get by for a couple of days with mobiles but to do business you need to know the native language otherwise the natives will surely take us for a ride.
