same old crap....one more time sumarising it.
1> Originally was called Mumbai.
2> Britishers could not pronounce the local name so started calling it Bombay.
3> Hence was named again by its original name Mumbai. The Britishers could not pronounce Mumbai also those people whose one of the ancestors was a Britisher and their family members were not aware of that opposed it.

I'm a General Category, convent educated, English speaker. I was born and partially grew up in a sophisticated cosmopolitan city called Bombay, which no longer exists, in a place called Bandra (W), where the culture was very different from what it is today.
1) Renaming Dadar Station: Well, what's wrong with that request? The argument that renaming won't change anything applies first to the Victoria Terminus station. Did the law & order, efficiency of trains, cleanliness of the station improve after it was renamed? Then why was that renamed? Should the name be changed again? If the name of a colonial ruler is so shameful to a bunch of people, why use the station built by her representatives? Why not destroy the station and build a new one?
2) Babasaheb's picture on the currency notes. Great idea, why not? Anyway Shri Mahatma Gandhiji Sir, who spent his entire life for truth and simplicity, adorning our currency notes is ironical. I wonder is the Mahatma would have liked it himself. However, if this change is agreed to, I still see no reason why Dadar station cannot be renamed.
After all, having the picure of the Father of the Nation of 1.21 Billion People, has not prevented us from naming the most expensive street of every Indian city as MG road!
if sharad pawar has guts and if he is real marath then he should rename mumbai to amedkar nagar.... that athwale left him and he know what is going to happen in next elections... he has got cancer and is nearing his death but the power is not letting him go... he should take sanays now... god bless him...
By doung this all sign and display boards, printed stationery etc will need to be changed in large quantity, so it will be another good source of getting commission to our politicians and Babus in this period of Kadki.

@ bellarynaga & thu tha: The issue of "Bombay" to "Mumbai" is not of "renaming" but of "reclaiming the original name". Materially, agree that things have not changed (for reasons we all know); but this "reclaiming of our linguistic culture from a colonial past" has had a great and deeper emotional significance.

Congress and NCP are now worried about next elections, after Shiv Sena and Republican Party of India (Athavale group)alliance. This move is a political move. Congress and NCP should now support the suggestion of Shri. Raj Thakare to release Rs 500/- currency notes with the picture of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar to respect him. However, congress will not agree for it since they do not want to loose Mahatma Gandhi from currency notes.
