It made sense at that time to deter those who wanted to feign joining iz1am, and then run away back to enemy with war intelligence gathered. But make no Mistake.. No verse in Q-Ran for apostasy punishment. So there is no question of Death Penalty for apostasy in general. But yes, I agree many scholars say what you say here. If a Muslim really wants to follow Is1am as it was in the 7th century and as per what some puritan mullahs are advocating- he would have to give up his job, close his bank account, take his kids out of school, shut off TV & Internet, entirely change his food & attire habits, pick up a sword & wage war on infidels or start rearing goats & live in a tent in the desert! Ridiculous, is it not? Christopher Hitchens said quite aptly that unbridled freedom of religion cannot be granted to anybody, even in free & liberal society becuase certain aspects of one's religion may be unpalatable or abhorrent to votaries of another faith!
