Why Maratha Lost???
by basant on Jan 19, 2011 01:03 AM  | Hide replies

Maratha the Marauders? some of the books I read have this title. Why, Maratha's went all across north India and they made no distinction between Hindus and Muslims in all those places. They just terrorized the whole area irrespective of Hindus or Muslim. This caused so much of resentment on locals that they never considered them friends. Dissidents of those Maratha's paid a heavy price for their cruelty. Thousands of Maratha's were left behind who never went back to their homeland.
When you do not make friends then who is going to supply you with provisions in far off land. So, they got no help from Sikhs, Rajputs, Jats or else but befriended with some muslims. Also, Infighting among themselves is one of the prime reason. Finally, carrying the overheads like women and children. Why did not they left them behind in Jhansi or Gwalior? Maratha's never tried to unite the whole India under Hindu flag, that's what I feel. If true, then they should not have behaved the way they did.

Why Marathi Lost?
by Kumar on Jan 19, 2011 12:13 AM  | Hide replies

Marathis were and are good in playing politics and ganging up against the weaker sections such as lower caste Marathi Dalits, South Indians and now UP/Biharis. This psyche runs deep, they had no chance against Abdali and history is proof of that.

Marathas were also hated by the Jat farmers. Even today the Jat elders will confirm that among all the looters and thugs that the farming community of Jats encountered, Marathas were the worst. They were even worse than the Isslamic invadors!
Also before blindly denying my point, the Manubadis should brush about their contact with the Jat comminity and check the fact for themselves. Remember, people who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it. The Peshaws were Marathi Brahmins (and not Marathas) and were experts in playing dirty politics that can even put todays politicans to shame. Sad but true.

The truth is always kept hidden
by dp on Jan 16, 2011 11:23 PM  | Hide replies

The biggest truth always overloaded on indian history is that...the majority of Rajputs never allied with the rest of Indians.

Had the Rajputs not betrayed Marathas and Sikhs, we would have defeated Abdali as well as Britishers. Though a majority of rajputs were never highlight of bravery there were few super heroes like Amar Singh Rathod, Amar Singh of Chittor. Perhaps after that only Hemu had the guts to stand against the Mughal onslaught.

Marathas too were to blame as they were majority and still weren't able to hold on to their allies and then they were fighting among themselves.

This is actually connected to the curse of Bhrigru Pro_phet - Seer. This will fade away slowly till the next century.

And those who think in their wild dreams that Ilzm was spread on basis of peace should know that they followed Sultanism after the demise of Pro_phet.

Some of the comments especiallu made by the North Indians gives the impression that they have habit of surerendering (Gulami mansikata) and thats the reason no one has dared to fight against the Mughals, what Maratha dared far ( thousands of Kilometer distance ) from Delhi and nearby places. Those who think that the Marath's are also cruel then remember that after 14 Jan 1761 Ahmedshah Abdalli even after winning the battle because of fear from the Maratha could not dare to Marh towards Delhi and also Never ever dared to attack India. More so today is waht because of those who fought against the Mughals and Afghanis that time.

Shivaji was invincible in battle !!

Shivaji survived (to the extend he did) only because he kept his wars confined to guerilla tactics against the Mughals and that too in his home terrain only.

Had Shivaji ventured out of Maratha terrains to engage the Mughals in open battle, he would certainly have been exterminated whatever the numbers of his troops were !

This is amply demonstrated by the fact that he spent the last decade of his life (1770 to 1780 CE) losing one fort after another to the Mughals and then resorting to guerilla tactis to try and re-capture them but failing !

No history textbook (even those written with a 'bent of mind' dedicated to making Shivaji a bigger hero than he really was) denies these facts !

So tell me something, is it written anywhere that you fight a war where ur weak ? what a morron. Shivaji did a great job, he created a concept of Swaraj, which even after his death survived and resulted in the defeat of Auranzeb after 27 years of war.

To me, both Abdali and Shivaji were tyrants and bandits of their times and neither deserves to be remembered for anything more than they were !

omitted to mention that the joint Maratha army was much bigger than Ahmed Shah Abdali's even after adding the strength of Shuja Ud Daula !

And also that the marathas were disliked not only by the Mughal chieftains, but also by every Rajput king of that time !!
