If man boasts of his knowledge and wisdom, let him create another earth in the Universe which can be inhabited.

My comment should say "hundreds of years". The millions of years refers to the largest black hole observed.

If it takes millions of years for the light to reach, does it mean that what we have seen was the data that many years back? It may or may not exist at this moment.

Yes..you are right and there is nothing wrong about millions of years in your comment. The closest galaxy Andromeda is 2.2 million light years away! The farthest the Hubble Space Telescope has gazed is some 10-11 billion light years when the universe was just 4-5 billion years young!

We will run out of oil, and soon

In 20 years max. All the politicians are doing nothing. In 20 years it will be man eating man for energy resources. Good bye flying. No planes to fly. Back to buggy carts. And you people are wondering about space travel.

Our politicians may be doing nothing but others are. Look up private space travel its out there and businesses are popping up. Also oil is not the only thing that produces energy in this world. Oil powers our cars not the power plants that are currently powering your computer.

Well power plants are being mainly powered by yet another fossil fuel - coal. To some extent they are also powered by crude oil, Natural gas and many other limited resources. I don't see any harm referring to all of them as simply oil (fossil fuel sounds a bit too long!). The point is that they are so very limited that they are going to last only so long. To that extent the original post above is correct. Maybe it does not happen as early as 20 years later but it is going to happen soon. Besides what happens when cars that are being powered by crude oil, stop running? The demand for locomotion will still not die. So cars will try to guzzle whatever other limited resources exist. This will quicken the rate at which even those resources will deplete.

compilation of some good comments I saw
by Just Curious on Dec 07, 2011 02:58 AM  | Hide replies

it only takes 300,000 years to get there.......better pee before we go.

so it would take 600 years, traveling the speed of light to get there. sign me up!

72 F ? Sounds balmy, where do I buy the ticket? 600 light years away? No problem, I'll pack a lunch.

I'm all for looking for other habitable planets. In the meantime, would it be too much to ask to take care of the one we're already living on?

Maybe scientists should be searching for intellegent life here on Earth.

If we really want to get there we need to tell the oil companies that there is oil there

On that planet, we are the aliens.

The super-duper high res telescope revealed that there's already an Apple store there.

They visited a million years ago and found a bunch of monkeys throwing sticks and rocks at each other. They visited last week and the only difference was that the WEA-PONS had evolved.
