Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Kasab!
by Peace Keeper on May 04, 2010 01:22 PM  | Hide replies

"At a time when the US finds it extremely difficult to deal with the 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, within its judicial system, the way India [ Images ] has dealt with Kasab [ Images ] is reflective of the maturity of Indian democracy and its judicial system, notes Harsh V Pant."

Is there any comparision between the two! It is like comparing an insect with a dinosaur! The apt comparision would be Hafiz Saeed and Khalid. Khalid is in US custody unlike Hafiz Saeed who is still enjoying freedom in Pakistan. Khalid has confessed to his various crimes unlike Hafiz.

Whether Kasab confesses or not is the most trivial matter. US is able to capture the masterminds unlike India which captures the perpetrators of the crime! Indian media should stop blowing its own trumpet in the name of "Success Achieved"! Is this what is called "Success"? It is an absolute failure. The Indian system (be it judiciary or the politics or the security agencies) have proved to be the biggest joke. They are fit for loud tantrums and nothing else beyond it!

Internal Security
by Ganesh on May 04, 2010 12:45 PM  | Hide replies

The internal security apparatus in India will improve only if a couple of top politicians are killed in terrorist attack. Till that time they will fool the public and play politics.

No you are wrong. Reason is -> The politicians are anyway having a near fool proof security always. It is the public who has the issue. So, even what you said happens, the security for the politicians will be beefed up more in such a way that the public needs to put leave to office and schools if the CM or PM or who ever goes outing in the city that day :-)

Can't agree more - Kasab is just an arrow
by natarajan shashi on May 04, 2010 12:22 PM

The focus needs to be see the security failures and augmenting them and not carried away in punishing the arrow, leaving the archer behing it.
There is atleast several layers of failure happened before this shocking incident had happened.
To me India will remain as target, but what we have within to improve in terms of intelligence, vigilance and security shall be the lesson learnt.

Its vote bank politics
by Anish Tripathi on May 04, 2010 12:18 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Harsh,

While I am impressed with the speed and alacrity with which the Indian judicial system has hadnled this trial, with full fairness to even someone like Kasab, my fears actuially start now.

Firstly, let us understand that we are celebrating on Kasab a bit too early. This is just the sentencing (which will happen later this week). This will now go to the High Court and then teh Supreme Court. This will take at least another six months to a year. Then Kasab will obviuosly utilize his Brahmastra of filing for a Presidential pardon (thank god his defence attorney is Hindu, else that too would have become an issue). Now the game will start. The Crown Prince of Congress has already pompusly declared during the last Lok Sabha elections that the mercy petition of say Afzal Guru can only be taken up only after the other 21 before him are decided upon. Kasab will obviusly be 23 or higher. Now the ever diligent supplicant Chidambaram had declared (after Rahul Gandhi) that he will clear one case per two months, which obviulsy has not been done - but that is another story. There was a story yest that Pratibha Patil has already said that she will not decide on Kasab in a hurry. The Congress is caught in its own web of vote bank politics now, and is damned if they do and damned if they don't. They cant decide on Kasab without decising on Afzal Guru. And of course, Farrukh Abdullah has equally pompously declared that India will burn if Afzal Guru is hanged! So what hope?

To just complete the point, what hope do we have that we will diligently chase teh other 20 who have been convicted by the court, inlcuding Hafiz Sayid. We need to declare him a proclaimed offender and pass a red corner notice against him.

What is the likelihood of this happening.

Kasab is far from being hanged anytime soon! The people killed by them be damned!!
