This is the only way to get vacate and then demolish these old buildings in Kolkata. Recently one buliding on Strand Road caught fire and now it is being demolistshed. Powerful builders and real state mafias are behind such fire.
I have witnessed the fire from the spot This fire brigade have hardly any infrastructure many people are trapped inside shouting for help but there is no net with Fire brigade no ladder to rescue them. Two person including one woman jumped off the building and died. What I have seen one local guy is trying his level best to rescue them and that unknown brave had rescued four human life and fighting for more with the help of two RAF.
It is Stephen Court, not Stephen Building which is in BBD Bag area. Many such buildings are very old, overcrowded with offices. Poor maintenance and scant attention to safety are evident as soon as one enteres such buildings. Such disasters just wait to happen in them. Perhaps not surprisingly, none cares till that happens.

There are very few offices in Stephen Court. It is mainly a residential building. However, I agree that many old office buildings in Calcutta are waiting for disasters.
The main Fire Station in Calcutta is perhaps one km from the fire, yet it took 1.5 hours for the fire engine to reach. Such is the state of traffic in Calcutta.

Thank you for the correction. Calcutta's administration has strange apathy towards things as old/unsafe buildings, traffic congestion - all overwhelmingly due to gross indiscipline.

I visited Calcutta last year and walked past Stephen Court several times. This once beautiful city of my childhood is now a shambles. West Bengal is waiting to jump from Com Jyoti Basu's frying pan into Ms Mamata Bannerji's fire.
