why the blame game now?
by democracy on Jun 09, 2010 07:58 PM

I truly believe that it is not fair to only hold Anderson responsible for all the mess that happened in 1984. No doubt he was the CEO of the company and had the responsibilty at the highest level, but then Indian Govt. also could have put its foot down saying that they will not give the required clearance certificates to the company to operate the fertilizer plant until and unless all security and safety realted issues have been met. So the problem here lies with the Indian Govt's lax and careless attitude towards its own citizens. Also, one impt. point there are always people placed in responsible positions who overlook matters of corporate governance and its their job to see that everything is safe and all major and minor issues have been addressed. When the tragedy happened they are to blame first and not Anderson, you cannot expect a CEO to come and repair safety valves or change rusted pipes! I hope everyone gets my point, if for e.g. a major fire breaks out in parliament then you cannot simply blame Manmohan Singh but the responsibility lies infact with the person who is responsible for addressing the safety (and ofcourse evacuation plan)of the building. Hope sense prevails on our idiotic politicians.

If you allow ...

someone to rape yourself royally, there is no point on blaming the rapist only; you also are party to the rape because you did not resist.

In this case, our administration, legislation and judiciary allowed themselves to be raped by UCIL.

So why blame UCIL only? Let us first look at our administrators, law-makers, law-keepers, and justice-givers!

Law of exclusion
by Suraksha on Jun 09, 2010 07:28 PM

Interesting irony there- CJM talking about the worst of cultures and excluding the Justice department's efforts to reduce punishment by modifying the charge and ammending the law to limit the punishment! COnvinient finger pointing with a moral high ground that rests on a swamp!

Yes, he spoke right..but Justice department didnt seem to have made the best efforts to uphold justice in this case. Justice Ahmadi talked at lengths explaining technicalities about why a severe scentence could not be served giving a vague relation with a driver to the Union Carbide Owners. A driver, Sir, doesnt own the car, nor does he have profit objectivesfor the well being of the car's operation. He is a employee incharge of piloting course and can be liable for his reckless actions, including endagerment. But an auto maker can liable for design faults in a car that leads to accident (Toyota example!) Instead, he worked to reduce terms.

Leaving legal interpretations aside..does he feel justice was well served and a sense conveyed of balance of power and rights! The answer is for the world to see...

Bhopal tragedy.
by vijayan vasudevan on Jun 09, 2010 07:27 PM

Warren Anderson and his accomplices converted Bhopal into Hitler's gas chamber, killing thousands, and maiming lakhs of Bhopalis. The living dead and their progeny will contiue to suffer. The pity is that our own governments, ministers, politicians, bureacrats, and the judiaciary too, let us down.Anderson was virtually escorted out of India. Why should we blame the US? It is our failure, our contempt for the lives of our own people. The high and mighty are never held accountable, and never punished. Are not we a banana republic?

This is usual, such things will keep happening
by Chandan Mazumdar on Jun 09, 2010 07:10 PM

There is nothing new with this tragedy and the outcome. Such incidents have happened in the past and will happen again in future, simply because we don't care if poor people die.

Union carbide paid some compensation which was nicely distributed amongst politicians and bureaucrats, so they gained out of it. So what if 15000 people died and several thousand left crippled for life, few rich people made money and that's all that matters in India.
