It can happen only in India

The Dow (Now owns UCC) website says:
"As a publicly owned corporation, Dow is unable, due to share-price concerns, to accept any responsibility for the Bhopal catastrophe caused by our fully owned subsidiary, Union Carbide"

Compensation by Government:
1. Rs 200/per month (later Rs 750) to widows
2. One-time ex-gratia payment of Rs 1,500 to families with monthly income Rs 500.
3. From 1990 interim relief of Rs 200 was paid to everyone in the family
Reasons for disaster:
1. No maintenance of plant for years
2. Overlook of industry norms to make profits:
3. Overlooked warnings
Reasons for delay in justice:
Central Government lethargy to look over into case (however, investigations were carried out properly by CBI and local government)
Number of People died:
15000 on same night another 20,000 in following years.
Court settlement with company and Indian Govt.
447$ million
why US is negligent?
1. Case is not subjected to US court.
2. Main Convicts not subjected to Indian courts.
3. Settlement done with company.
4. Congress govt thought perusing US on the issue may hamper bilateral ties.
Ironically:
In India road accidents can have more severe punishments than killing 35000 people.
Reasons for weak laws in India:
1. We dont care till it is not affecting us as the saying goes "it is good till it is good for me"
2. We are mentally not ready to change it.
Conclusion:
Its safer to break the law than to follow it. (I am serious)

worse than third world!!
by kieran dsouza on Jun 09, 2010 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

All the filthy hazardous chemical industries are being outsourced here due to non implementation of rules.

There is experimental vaccine scam being perpetuated on tribals by various foreign Pharmaceutical companies

Toxic laden ships being broken in Alang, Guj with unknown consequences to environment and workers. Even now there is a toxic ship from US that has run aground on coast line releasing all toxic poisons into the sea!!

Politicians, judiciary, Government itself have abandoned people. All interested in getting their commissions, people can go to hell

DOW & UCC still killing people
by Bhagat Singh on Jun 09, 2010 09:39 PM

Do you know that DOW[current owner of UCC] is not revealing the compund structure of MCC gas leak as requested by doctors who feel knowing the exact composition of the gas will help in designing the treatment and medicine for curing.

You know why DOW/UCC won't reveal? Because it is apparently trade secret and won't be revealed even if it will help in curing the deceased.

WOW - call it extreme capital greed. Putting profit before people's lives.

congress is selling the lives of Indians. in the nuclear bill the congress is giving up the right of India to sue a MNC if a catastrophe like Bhopal happens again. On second thought Indians deserve this as they keep voting for congress

This vulture with poor culture ignored prime suspect, Anderson!
by Pankaj Kumar on Jun 09, 2010 08:42 PM  | Hide replies

It is Indian judicial system’s culture to tolerate and promote vultures like this Tiwari. We will not know the reasons for such a light sentence and keeping mum on Warren Anderson. Is it his culture to ignore the prime culprit and instead deliver unnecessary and unbecoming remarks? These may be his and his judicial system’s cultures. But they are certainly not part of majority of our cultures.

I don't look at issues on the basis of caste, religion and region. Some wherever they go they know only how to destroy lookinf from those narrow angles! With such mindset of people, some write nonsense as in the past.

Half-educated people look at small issues instead of the big picture and can write mind boggling and unbelievable rot.

It is Indian judicial system's culture to promote such poor ones
by Pankaj Kumar on Jun 09, 2010 08:37 PM

This Tiwari is another who went with the prosecution. Does he not have brain? He should have pulled up prosecution instead of showing his culture and the most rotten judicial systems ugly face again! People like him are responsible for the tortures we are going through in our court system. It is Indian judicial system's culture to promote such most unbecoming judges!

No Concern for Safety
by Di Pi on Jun 09, 2010 08:25 PM

Every second day a child falls into open bore-well. Every second day someone hits a truck carrying iron rods yet you can see such trucks in the City. A semiconductor company in Delhi had production in basement (it still may have) with hydrogen gas lines inside. Highly flammable goods are stored in hearts of the city. Driving is rash with no discipline. We really are the third world.
