excellent interview
by pers one on Jan 20, 2010 05:22 AM

Very sincere, polished comment from a very Big hearted Politician and a true Freind. When such a person could not hide the mistakes and steps taken by JB in taking Bengal backward, they must be only true. Today, he is no more. But, can anyone forget his role in taking Bengal to a level where every Bengali has become a Laughing Stock to others....

by Chana Masala on Jan 20, 2010 05:19 AM

SRI JYOTI BASU, THE THEN CHIEF MINISTER OF WEST BENGAL MISUSED HIS POWERS AND ABUSED HIS AUTHORITY TO ENSURE MONETARY GAINS AND BENEFITS FOR UNSCRUPULOUS BUSINESSMEN, TURNED MAFIA LEADER SANJAY KUMAR JHUNJHUNWALA AND ALSO FOR HIS OWN SON CHANDAN BASU.

My personal thoughts on JB
by PK on Jan 20, 2010 03:29 AM

I came to know about JB from my grandfather, also a communist back in Assam of the 40's, 50's and 60's. My grandpa fought tooth and nail for the freedom movement, even hoisted the Indian flag in '42 and was imprisoned by the British. I don't know why he was influenced by Communism and Marxism after Independence but thats how he got to know JB.

They would walk miles and cycle a lot, going to villages, holding meetings, discussing communism and the movement, spreading the idealism. They were all very committed to it. Luckily my grandpa didnt go into active politics, later remained a devoted school teacher till the end. He passed away almost 20 years ago. I dont think he approved of militant and violent activism which later were to become the hallmark of Marxists in Bengal.

My own thoughts are - no philosophy or ideologoy can justify causing hardship and suffering to the common people. So JB's legacy in WB which we all can see proves the failure of communist and marxist idealism. He has gone now, but look at what hardships he has left behind for the common people and their children. Bengalis need some magic to pull themselves out of this hole. Good luck and may India realize its true potential.

We ought to be greater than the sum of our parts.

Politician in true sense
by rituraj pathak on Jan 19, 2010 10:48 PM

I am very young and naive to comment on the late Jyoti Basu. If an old politican like Mr. Siddhartha Shankar Ray, says that Late Mr. Jyoti Basu was true gentleman then it must be so, for never once did he ever indulge in any mudsling politics which is the a very rare case in today's politics. He was politician in the true sense. If people are now saying that he was primarily responsible in pushing West Bengal, Kolkata in particular on the back foot in terms of economic development then why did they vote him back to power. Why didn't they protested at that time. Now when he is no more among us, why are they saying such things. If you all can judge him because of the present economic condition of West Bengal, then please do take into consideration the land reforms and panchayati raj (devolution of power to the local bodies) decisions taken by him, also.

Self proclaimed greatness.....
by Manish kumar on Jan 19, 2010 06:10 PM  | Hide replies

I think he was primarily responsible for pushing Calcutta on back foot in terms of economic development, social equality and science & Technology. Calcutta was once one of the most educated, prosperous and economically developed cities of india and left's rule left west bengal with nothing but a glorious past to cry on. This was under Basu's rule. I am just so sad to see all the political leaders saying that he was a great leader but i can't find any reason for that considering he was only interested in winning elections and keeping himself in power and in the process of doing so, lead the state into poverty, mis-management, babu culture and corruption. I agree he was a senior political figure but i don't see any reason to rate him highly as a good leader.

I agree, Basu took the state from Glory to Ditch. But then eveyone becomes a good elader after they die. Even Lenin, Castro (soon will be), Stalin, Kim Jung-Ill (north Korea)..so on.
He was more like a Robin Hood for the poor--hated by the rich and smart people and hence most people visiting him now are from poor background or those hard core-communists. Life is afterall full of celebration until you run out of steam, so why not celebrate one past CM?
