as a son of army officer i believe that there are some extremely brilliant officers I have come across who did not believe in yesmanship got their careers torn to tatters, thats the fundamental problem with appraisal system of armed forces in india...you simply do not have any whistleblowing channel within this tightly guarded institution...if it can be resolved i believe forces will get complaints far more than it can handled.

I believe the greatest recognition lies when you are walking on the street and some guy comes running out of nowhere and salutes you and enquires about your welfare and your family though you can't place where or when you met him till he states the unit and the year and it slowly starts to dawn on you that being steadfast and not compromising on one's itegrity was well worth it in the end.

Its the same everywhere. My old man got the boot from the Army first for the same reason. He was the only guy nominated for Para SF from his batch but the level of corruption back then was so disgusting, he chose to quit instead. There's little that can be done. Change cannot be forced on them. It has to come from within. Society is corrupt. We are a greedy lot. How would wearing or not wearing a uniform change the inner core unless the call comes from within? I mean, officers selling off jawans rations, having the supplier deliver less to the mess and the rest to his residence. He faced the same thing in a CPO after he quit Army. You just cannot run away from it. Apart from stalled promotions and zero rewards, at least no one could fix him but I saw the life of an upright DIG shatter right in front of my own eyes by the corrupt IPS lobby. It was saddening to watch as mute spectators and the poor man died a broken man whilst these b@s turds got promoted.
Whistleblowing will get you shot. There will be attempts on your life or your loved ones. Lived through it all and I know for sure how screwed up we Indians are. After all, those freaks are a part of our country too and we cannot wish them away.

you have made a correct observation on the appraisal system.

the most successful appraisal system is found in schools and colleges where the test scores are put up on a notice board and all can see and comment. the openess and transparency of the system forces honesty in grading by teachers.

closed confidential files do not allow this in the armed forces or modern businesses.

the army had a system of solving this in a war: corrupt and incompetent officers were shot by their own troops. Now we have a huge bunch of senior officers that never leave delhi. if they were in the field, 50% would be shot dead.

I know, but a civilian government lording over Army strategy and ordering them on how to fight a war is equally disgusting. Its quite frustrating to fight with your hands tied behind your back and yet receive flak from all and sundry. There was nearly a mutiny in 1965. I can't remember if was three or five companies of the JAT regiment which was mowed down by friendly fire as they were retreating from the frontline. The IA Tank column thought it was the advancing Paki Army and let loose a barrage on them. Not sure if there were any survivers from that turkey shoot.
Indian Army was at Sialkot and would have advanced further. Paki's neither had ammo nor fuel to carry on a sustained campaign. Forget 65, we had them by their nuts in 1971. What came of it? PoK ought to have been resolved right then.
The present bunch of jokers in Kashmir valley have migrated from Pakistan over the decades by crossing over our porous borders.
One question begs to be answered - What does the Army get in return for its dead and all the whipping? Zilch, Nada... I guess it is this which drives certain ranks to behave in a certain manner. Like the thought - When everybody is corrupt, I'm not going to get a reward for staying honest. So big deal....

facts r not stranger than fition!!
by Ratnajyoti Choudhury on Dec 14, 2010 10:04 AM

The army is not immune to the society it comes from. If the society is plagued by the vices of corruption of all sorts it shall pervade the army as well. The corrupt practices were in place fom lst 50/60 years , it has grown in proportion to the level of present day- the BUTTERFLY EFFECT.

WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT R WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Like as there r no introspection in our civil & plitical life so there is none in the armed fprces.
We breed corrupt officers at the top like the Kppors & kauls... & that what get in return.
Probity is non existent in the army. Why was Gen. Panag transfered when he stepped into forbidden zone 0f the misapppropriation by Gen Kappor in the northenr command(the abuse possibility as stated in the article) is yet to be answered.

The armed forces r only the reflection of our national spectrum- the national character of corruption of all sorts- finacial, subversion, right upto the 'below the belt level'.

Rot in the Army
by Raj Rajaram on Dec 14, 2010 09:56 AM

The rot emanates at the political level. If the powerful politicians can get away with murder why not the Army folks who are equally powerful in their own field. The root cause of all our problems are the corrupt political 'LEADERSHIP'(WHAT A LAUGH) which has to be destroyed from its root or else we will go the Paki way.

Hmm

I'm hardly surprised as the Indian Army particularly had this awful habit of weeding out a vast majority of candidates with a non-military background irrespective of how well they perform at SSB. The rot did not set in last night, Ajai. Its been around for ever.
More so, little can be done when the head is rotten. Do interviewing officers at SSB have a soft corner for Army brats? Hell yes.
Is everybody in the Army corrupt? Hell no.
Did corruption seep in yesterday? No.
Ajai, you did nothing to investigate the Sukna land scam. Most of what we hear in the media were half truths. Neither were the enquiry details or findings published post judgement. If you look at the way Radia has manipulated the Media, there is very little left to imagination. There is always a vested interest in a good number of the muck raking that goes around. What I wish to know is, why aren't the Babu's and Politicians involved in the Adarsh society scam named? Why are only the Defence Forces people dragged over hot coals? For someone who has seen the workings of these kind of deals from up close, I know for a fact that the Babus and Netas would have demanded a bigger slice of the real estate pie for clearing the project. The obvious result is the presence of "social luminaries" in Adarsh Society. So, why make Army the whipping boy for all evil in our society when the society is corrupt? After all, don't we live in a democracy where civilian authority rules supreme over
