what differance does it make to you whether he has car or cycle. Point is he has done his job and he was comfortable with all the inputs. Do not be materiastic

It is not unusual for a researcher in Western Countries to walk ot cycle to work; Infact it is a norm.
Wonderful to know an India settled in USA shared the noble prize, it has proved that indians are intelligent. Hats off to Venky's simplicity.... Sare Jaha se acha Ashok

He lives in Cambridge England but holds a US passport.( As for the second part of your comment - 7 Indian origin people have won the Nobel Prize as compared to more than 7 americans winning every year ) and we become Sare jahan se achaaa ? Lol
From what I have read about Venky he comes across not only as a genius of studies but also a good hearted person. His demeanor suggests he is genuinely humble. He takes it as it comes and also believes lot of other Indians are doing great scientific work as well (not like 'I am the best'). He believes that Indians need not go out of country any more as good facilities (and decent pay) are now available here as well. I think it's only a matter of time that more Indians will start getting these honours. Hats off to Venky for his great work and simplicity!

Yaaar big achievers are mostly like him...simple and unassuming. Its only the upstarts who show off. In stanford during my college days, I used to see this dirty unwashed guy with flying hair and unkept beard sitting with a starbucks coffee cup and a couple of books and a laptop in a Palo alto cafe all day. He wud be thinking and talking to himself and occassionally met a couple of other guys there who looked equally weird....... till the cafe owner told me - all three of them were accomplished nuclear physicists and two of them had won Nobel Prizes.
I thought only IIT people win Nobel prizes.Other than IITs everyone else is dumb and fools. World has advanced only because of IITs.May be i was wrong.

Probably there are no IITians who have won a NP,partly it may be due to that there are no prizes for ENGG subjects.

Dear Ajith, look into every avenues of life advancement/careers in india, it is definitely dominated by atlest 80 to 90 percent by the upper social class. Dont deride the socially backward who are just getting literate now. Have a heart, they are trying to survive. Apart from government efforts, what efforts has the society done to backwards, only helping to be backward. Dear Ajith, you only want people to clean your mess, not to grow up.

THAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF SIMPLE LIVING AND HIGH THINKING, TIME FOR OUR NETAS TO LEARN A LESSON TWO, RATHER THAT JUST TRYING TO BLOW THEIR OWN TRUMPET.

That time it was a wise decision no doubt (I guess he left more for his passion and less for money) but as Venky himself says, now it is not necessary for Indian to go abroad to do research. One of his other observation is that we Indians do not recognize talent and good work unless appeciated by western institutions. Which is very true! But things are changing and not only we get some great scientists here (the Universities have a big rome to play here apart from the corporates) we will also gather the confidence to recognize our own people.

I would say such decision is wise even today.(esp. if it is for passion and not for money) we have nothing more than politics in every field here.
where whole advisor are more dependant upon the blessing of baba ram dev, sai baba and mohamad chisti,,,,durgah of ignorance,,, we need to follow american scintific knowledge, exploring the solar beyong our imaginaton
At first many many congrats to Mr.Venkataraman, I really salute to his simplicity and his work towards charity another noble thing, Its better if we Indians ont harp much of he being Indian right now he is an American, Rather lets make our coming generations to do the same in India
