Colourful

to say the least. The rains always bring out some of the best memories of childhood whether in a city or in a rural setting. Also some of the most hilarious incidents happen when it starts raining. Rains in Mumbai bring out the humourous side of the people to full effect.

Whatever the economic situation, one must not forget to enjoy the rains in India, they're harbringers of hope and fun.

Memories

Many years back, when I was a kid we used to enjoy the first rains in Mumbai by playing football in slush and get amazingly wet and dirty.I can still remember the rain pounding on the buildings and everything being so serene.Drinking cutting chai, bhaji, vada pav..There was no cable or anything like that only Doordarshan that nobody watched much.. Everyone were outside most of the time.. Oh it was sooo much fun.. Wish I could roll back time..

Now days kids do nothing but watch TV!! It's such a sick life now..Technology has made life robotical..

You (or your kids) can still do the same things Mr. Sameer. Go and enjoy the rain and everything you wanted. Who is stopping you? You are stopping yourself and blaming the technology. Get rid of the cable connection (if you have) and put back only Doordarshan.

S.i.c.k person. You are one of those guys who move with the crowd and dont know how to be independent.

You're sounding too melancholy Sameer! hehe. Yeah playing football is an absolute must during the rain, and you have to make sure every inch of the body gets a mud bath.

Today, people pay for such mud packs and ayurvedic mud baths :))

The early days of doordarshan did not impinge much on the time of the person, as most of the programs were only available in the evening after around 7 and on weekends. So there was enough time atleast for kids to get out and have a blast playing this and that.

I guess with urbanisation, a lot of open spaces are also lost and kids today don't have the place to play even if they want to.....add to that a tremendous increase in study load and pressure, and they're really bogged down. But kids will be kids, they will find some way of having a good time with friends.

It might sound cynical, but the present infrastructure is not suited to the sort of rains that Mumbai receives. Also there have been too many structural mistakes and no one is keen to take the initiative to resolve the problem. So it is going to be the same this year, unless it rains less. The waster management in Mumbai needs to be improved several notches as also the condition of the sewer infrastructure.

Why only slum children ?
by SK Virtharia on Jun 23, 2009 11:52 PM  | Hide replies

Why you need to publish a photograph of only slum children ? All children welcome the rain with great enthuasism. Because you want to show the world only this face of India. I think nobody would like to show the dirtiest corner of his house to others, despite he would like to clean it.

You are absolutely correct SaneIndian - " Politically correct idiots are the root cause of India's problems."

Dude, it doesn't matter where the children are from. Since when did we start differentiating among our own children?

We're not bound by any norms to put our best image forward. It is not about truth or reality. It is just a happy ocassion - The rains have come and in Mumbai that is a big big thing.

Hi SK, if you scroll through you will see that the next images are of the common man (middle class) & not just of slum children.

Of course, they could have kept the slum children photo somewhere in the middle, but they appear to be the happiest lot

I remember my childhood. When the schools are closed due to heavy rains, I used to join my 15-20 friends and go out for a rain-walk. Never enjoyed life like that. Can not forget eating garmagaram bhajiya and vada-pav with chai at the mulund rly station while its raining outside.
