With China, its very difficult to predict which way the wind blows. So, we need to be absolutely careful with them. They have armed Pakistan with nuclear weapons and missile technology and there will be a few in China still asking the question, why is it still not being used.
To deal with this situation, we should stop seeing ourselves as constrained. I must admit at a ground level we will need the communist people of Kerala, Bengal and the Maoist extreme fringe to accept that China does not have answers to India's problems and will not provide any help in solving it.
I guess the same view is there in China and they don't have a fifth column like some of the fringe communists who consider China's founding principles to be anything better than Indian constitution.
We do need the communists to balance out the extreme right wing of financial, communal and social lobbies operating in India. I respect them for their opposition of things like privatization of India's national assets. Had it not been for them, we would have faced a crisis of unimaginable proportions in the bank, small savings and PSUs.
Fundamentally, India can continue to grow more prosperous and overtake China if it allows for social reforms like slowly recasting the feudal cast system into a more democratic institution that allows for people to retain their identities but profess and grow based on their abilities. China does better than India in some respects here.
Many may not be knowing, and China being rigid on information flow also would not like to propagate. Fact is that China had a worst year in 2008, the country faced one of the acute draughts in 40 years. Despite this, this great nation stunned the world with such a wonderful show during olympics. The growth rate is about 13% and the country has lot of food reserves to take care of even one more difficult year

with such a tight line to follow, everything in the country can be projected as a great glorious civilization.

WE HAVE TO BE ANTI CHINA - PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IN THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY CHINA HAS ALWAYS BE ANTI INDIA AND CONTINUES TO BE. They are selling arms to Pakistan, troubling us in Arunachal, in Tibet, in security council and everywhere.

I have a question for Mr. Claude. The heading says "Why China could have a difficult 2009" but the content is nothing but a history lesson, which most people will agree with me, does not hint at future events. Then will Mr. Claude kindly tell us how the content and the title are related to each other?
