Just to add...we can say that our government is corrupt coward etc etc...can you say that about your government....without worrying about yourself and your families security. You guys have 2 or 3 different ethnicity and 2 or 3 different religions and cant even handle that...our country has 1000s of languages races religions and ethnicity...and we are still holding strong...still together....which Indian would not be proud of it. As you said..life is not simple...its much more . Btw just to point it out...you are deviating from the original discussion we were having :)..old Chinese trick ehh...dont worry carry on..here in India even you are free to express yourself...must be very different for you :)

But where will you prefer to live...a place where you are free to express your emotions and beliefs..religious or whatever or a place where the state decides what you should express. Isnt it amazing that we are progressing almost as fast you folks..where government lacks private people fill in through their entrepreneur skills. Now its time for you to use your brains that do you want freedom development or only development and no freedom. Most Chinese from their birth have been fed on the state controlled propoganda and news. The school books have been controlled and histories distorted or twisted as per the interpretation that the Chinese government wanted. Absence of free media and total control on information is a very powerful tool. You let your population know only the interpretation you want to. Its not phoenixnju's fault that he thinks that way. he has been programmed from his birth to think this way. Most Chinese I have met say that we should not let go of what we have...Tibet was controlled by Chinese for say X years and it is rightfully ours. Well leaving aside whether the premise is correct or not but going by that logic US belongs to UK and China to Japan..how far do you want to go back to history to claim that the land is yours..is there any end to it. Phoenixnju think dude...search for Tibets' history on Google..oops I forgot even Google is filtered for you :)

While writing on the Tibet crisis,I have urged the Chinese Govt to call for a negotiated settlement or else the dormant ethnic groups may rise elsewhere in China.This is what exactly happened when Chinese Intellectual finally spoke against the Govt.This is history. For the first time,such a group came out against the policies of the govt.Its a caution to the Chinese leadership that many such protests may come if they do not mend fences in Tibet.The intellectuals rightly called upon to stop violent suppression of the protests and urged the Govt to negotiate with them for a lasting solution.Chinese leadership should take this as a warning and stop indulging rehtoric and waste of time sitting on prestige.Time is slipping away from them.They should in their own interest try to negotiate with the protestors or their leaders for a settlement of all outstanding disputes sans independence.Tibetans including Dalai Lama on their part should not insist on independence but demand larger autonomy so that the Tibetans have a right to elect their own representaives to solve all their socio-economic problems.India and other world powers should contribute in their own way for such a solution urging the Chinese leadership to abandon the path of violent suppression.They may be invite all leaders for negotiation if not Dalai lama. Anything can be solved through negotiation with give and take policy.The Tibens are in the meantime abandon all activities to give the Chinese breathing times to agree

Yes. I think Dalai Lama and Chinese government have more common ground for negotiations than is generally believed.
It is nice to see China grant freedom of express ion to its intellectuals on political issues. For a communist country, it is progress by far. Chinese communist party of today is certainly less restrictive for press freedom compare to the Soviet communist party. It has many businessmen who do not want hardliners who embarass them in front of their international business partners.
Whatever be the merits of the Tibetan case, the US & its allies do know the importance oftiming. With the Beijing games around the corner, they know China's options in responding to western criticisms are limited. If China goes too far, they risk boycott of their games and face economic ruins therafter. One hopes they will grant some kind of autonomy to Tibet so that the long suffering Tibetans can finally return to their homeland and live happily thereafter.
It is a welcome step that Chinese intellectuals are internally raising voice against the Chinese government's handling of Tibet crisis. Such an internal pressure is necessary to humanize the chinese authoritarian responses. Just the international pressure won't do.
