Teen aged etc
by Saddam H on Jan 31, 2007 03:14 AM  | Hide replies

I do not understand the logic. If teen age is willing why not? What is the problem?
What is bad is doing these things without consent (rape)

Model Minority no more!
by Desi Fellow on Jan 31, 2007 03:10 AM

Alas, we are fast losing our place as the model American minority, a status we've worked so hard for so long to obtain.
This story, along with the ones on Dateline NBC are proof sufficient of this sad and disturbing trend.

by JASHVIR CHAUDHARY on Jan 31, 2007 02:12 AM

No biggie. It would have been better to come up with the news and mention casually that the guy happend to be an Indian . Dog biting someone is not a news, instead a person biting a dog is what we call news.

Quality Journalism
by Deepkunwar Mane on Jan 31, 2007 01:27 AM  | Hide replies

Firstly, responding to the news, If we take pride in somebody's achievements for being Indian or of Indian-origin & go ga ga over it, Let's face criticism & condemn actions which are uethical & disgraceful. Certainly more so, because of our value system & socio-cultural set-up, we look down upon anything like this.

Secondly, I agree that this news is not worth the space consumed for an International News Headline. If it happens in US, something similar happens elsewhere too. If it had to be on the cover page, The headline should not have been about an Indian being caught by an FBI plot but it should have made news about the disgraceful things happening in the society openly & come as a warning for parents to mentor, orient & safeguard their children from such incidences.

Also I know that there was not just one person caught in the plot but many of 'em in different cities of US when FBI & some news channel(MSNBC) also planned to take action against such incidences to catch predators in disguise & grab. Then why talk about only the Indian guy who was caught. Let's condemn the whole act & people indulging into it. The internet should not be taken casually as an easy access to hatch plots for such predators to exploit under-age children for that matter even adults...

Let's expect some Quality Journalism for good!!!

Indian newspapers obscessed with Indian names
by JM on Jan 31, 2007 12:29 AM  | Hide replies

Someone got arrested in the US for luring a teen for sex whose named happened to be 'Indian'. He may not be an Indian but even if he was so what? We need to stop obscessing ourself about anything and everything that happens to people with Hindu/Indian names.

The same goes with people like Sunita Williams or Amartya Sen. Brand-name "INDIA" is bigger than those people. I would want India to be in a position when Sunitha Williams or Amartya Sen claim they are proud about INdia rather than the other way round.

This news is not worth being an 'international'. Rediff (and other Indian newspapers) should stop reporting such news and gain some respect.

Whats next? Some Kishor Patel sustains dog bites in the US?

Yep! Yep! Yep!

If not millions hundreds of Americans and Europeans are involved in similar crimes. But they don't refer these incidents as "American" or "European". Give us a damm break!

I just moved to US for my education and I really don't see a reason why we should generalize this term "Indian".

FYI. (Bill Gates, Microsoft, USA), (Steve Jobs, Apple, USA) (Larry Ellison, Oracle, USA) all these elements are related, still they maintain a distinct identity of their own.

And, no individual is bigger than a country! If they think they are, well they need some serious help.

I don't know about you but I find it interesting to read about India and Indians all around the world. I think it is the job of rediff to report. And people will vote by clicking and reading such articles. I am proud that rediff also chose to report things that are in the dark side of NRI/PIO behavior along side all the achievements.

Well said JM. I think that India should stop taking pride on the people who has acheived in other country with other countries facilities, it is cheating. side by side India should not be ashamed for the people done wrong in other country. Simple.

I totally agree with Mr JM. It's high time that our media should be smart to distinguish between Indians and Non-Indians. An Indian name doesn't make them INDIAN. I've been in the US for the last 4 yrs. and I see how indians avoid their fellow Indians; they hate themselves to be called Indians. But whatever, these Indians are always discriminated from their fellow Americans, and in the end the so-called "Indian Americans" end up being "Trishanku". They can neither accept themselves being Indians and they are not recognised as Americans. Hence, our media should step forward highlight only those news that are o importance to India, not something an American does in the US and it is the front page news in India. What a shame!!

Last few weeks we have been heard a businessman and his servant killed more than 30 kids in Noida and police refused to register FIR for a while. I know why JM got frustrated and the above news is nothing for our standard. In the developed countries, every bad things got media attention and Law enforcement agency is very sincere to solve the crimes. Last year, daughter of President Bush got a ticket for drunken driving and is it possible in our country?

Whats religion got to do with it? I dont think the religion banned child marriages in the past.
Dont go overboard, it is a shame to the person who committed the crime and to him only. The country has nothing to be ashamed of, this is a crime in the country of his origin too.

Actually the religion neither approved nor banned child marriage. Btw, marrying two childs is no big deal (that's what the system was).

Later caste-Brahmins misused it to marry very young pubescent girls. It wasn't a part of hindu system, it was an evil malpractice by those who had "control of power" (it's seen even now in politics).

This is not the first and is definitely not going to be the last. Watch MSNBC predator series. Even though Indians are a tiny minority in US, there are plenty of representation this area of disgrace.

Hindu religion also had devadasi system till recently. MS Subbalakshmi is one of the famous people. Tamil nadu even has prominent politicians who were born to devadasi's.

2000 Nepali girls are abducted into India every month. Mostly become sex workers. Mumbai and Calcutta together have 2,00,000 prostitutes most of them started off as children. And they serve an Average of 5 customer/day that is 1 million/10 lakh Indians in just those two cities.

hi guys

every country has its own tactics and laws. hence in US u might get arrested for soliciting sex with minors and the tactics used to capture the online "sexual predators" are different.. likewise u might get sentenced to death in some countries for drug trafficking.. each country has its own laws and if u wish to stay there u have to understand and abide by these laws.. otherwise ur always welcome to leave the country..

Isn't there more than that. If there was no or no one to enforce it, do you folks think it is OK to do it. Isn't there a human side to it. There is always a small girl or a boys life involved in such things and it takes a sick mind to do such things. that is what I wanted to bring about. The law is written because of that not the other way around.

I still dont understand why there is a debate on the tactics of capturing these online sex offenders. These tactics are nothing new in US and its not they are targeting "Indians". This goes for every offender irrespective of creed or religion. Sex or soliciting for sex with minors is a crime. U see, it was not the chatting with the minor which got that guy in trouble, but chatting in a "sexual tone" and "asking to have sex". these are the "magic words" which will get u in jail. Online sick predators can only be trapped likewise. I read this reply to me from H N "Looks like if there was no law you would condone with such activities. Hope you don't". Well, dont twist my words HN. The debate was on the tactics used and not the law. Wherever on this planet, sex with minors must be considered a serious offence.

A law or not...this is in human to to such things with a minor. be rational. think abt some 14 yrs old girl u know around u and then say the same thing. this is wrong anywhere in this world.
