Question :

Why should the indian public pay the middle vendors if there is a much more efficient way of getting their food.

Extending the same logic should we ban all metro trains and busses so that people travel in auto and generate more employment ?

Rich getting richer and poor, poorer
by srinath suriyanarayanan on Feb 26, 2007 04:58 PM

This is what is happening in India. No one bothers about the poor and the needy. In retaile we are looking at an interesting trend. While small and petty traders are displaced, wealth is now getting concentrated with the rich. This trend is dangerous and soon we will see its effect.

When these poor people can't afford to give their children a decent meal or the basic necessities of life, what right do they have to procreate and bring them in this world? Even the beggars at traffic signals have large families - with each one begging and living as scavengers!! When would the need among the poor and downtrodden to have multiple offsprings in the name of continuing family lineage carry on? While they are far removed from the macro economic concepts of inflation and the poverty index, the grassroot level problem lies in issues like these also. Not to say this is the reason or the only cause - just a thought for families like Vanaja's to stop the misery of human beings such as their offsprings. The conditions are not going to change anytime in the future. Ever. It's ultimately upto each individual to eke out as good a living as he/she can. This just could be one way to do it.

Ringa DingDong,

Your concern is very legitimate. But lack of education is one of the main reasons why the population is growing at alarming pace.

Government should send the beggars to rehab and educate them and get them some work which will help them sustain their livelyhood. If Government can't do it all by itself, the NGOs should come forward to join hands and make a difference in their lives.

I've not done Masters in Economics, and I would not comment on how the inflation should be contained. I read a lot of views expressed in this forum. May the concerned authorities take note of it.

When you express yourself on public forum like this refrain from being emotional. Do mind the sensitivity of fellow readers.

Regards,
Vasant

Any Govt's priority should be controling the price level of common commodities. If it is not possible then what is use of calling Best Finance Minister, best budget. By introduction of VAT, Service Tax, other taxes, FM showed that he excelled in improving the country's revenue but not a common Indian people. Rich becomes richer and poor becomes poorer. No. He has to certainly adopt certain policies to curb the raising prices and introduce certain measures to uplift the poor people. But at the same time not to give them things freely. You give books freely to educate them. Once they are educated give them jobs and they will stand on their own. By giving free loans, you are exploting the regular tax payer. The small industrial people cannot come up with these type of tax structures. Other wise it is just a qualm among all section.

Trading should be checked seriously and internet trading is one of the reasons for price hike, middle men also play a vital role in sky rocketing of commodities for General public. Hoarding of essential goods also to be checked. Poor becoming Poorer and Rich becoming richer should be stopped. Strict rules to be followed and to see that all the basic commodities are within the reach of the common man.

In the mad rush of booming stock market, FDI investment , globalisation , economic liberalisation, acquisitions of foreign companies by Indian companies and blah blah blah, we have forgotten those unlucky people like the lady in the article.
Neither the rich or the government care about the common people who have been badly hit by inflation.
Instead of doing something constructive for people the government is more intrested in pleasing MNC like WalMart etc. The companies will come to India and create problems for the small shop owners.
Shame on us!

Mr. Srinivas, there is absolutely no need to have a feeling of shame. I feel this is bound to happen, yes you are true that govts should take responsibility and should be proactive enough to atleast frame some kind of relief to the poors but I will go against you when you mean that govt should not please MNC(s) to invest in indian market. Such investments are of great necessity and foreign investment anytime helps our economy to move upwards.

Dear Mr.Rohit.

When India has become republican, Nehru, the first PM, had interested in westernaised policies. Rajagopalachrya, alias RAJAJI, was against it. He had told him to give importance to Agriculture for the first 20 years not to Industrialisation. He had a point that if given importance to Industrialisation first, Water level would diminish, soil get corrupted. But Nehru was adament. Yes during his period lot of industrials unit were formed. What happened now, as Rajaji said, we are striving and looking means to improve the ground water levels. He had asked him to unite the rivers of India. But till date we are fighting for water between neibouring states. Had it been done earlier, India's money value would be more than Dollars and others foreign currencies. Prices of commodities would not have increased as of today. Now our FM is forcing us to pay the price for what earlier Politician did to Indian economy. It is through pressure we live not through pleasure. Whose fault it is. India's present condition is only because of wrong decisions made by the formal politicians. We are paying the price of it. The Govt is harvesting from us.

I think you are wrong. Nehru was for a socialist policies and Rajaji was for capialistic policies. When Nehru was adamant on the socialism, Rajaji left the Congress and formed a new party
