'Morality has disappeared from India'
by on Feb 02, 2007 02:59 PM

I fully agree with Lt. General M L Thapan, that it was none of our business to interfere in the internal matter relating to present Bangladesh and Srilanka . Our own country is in great disorder. These disorders are due to selfish motives of so called our national leaders and this will continue till our leaders and bureucrats are engaged in courruption. One point I always want to stress that the nationalism and feeling for the country should be taught in schools from nursery stage so that we can atleast expect that the leadership will be perfect after next 25 years.

Few Thoughts from someone who belongs to younger generation
by gaurav sharma on Feb 02, 2007 02:40 PM  | Hide replies

Sir, there are no two ways to what you have mentioned. Like a true Armyman you have highlighted RIGHT and WRONG.
But being an optimistic individual as I am and I guess as most of the indians are, I think we need to be more than just being optimistic. We need action and participation at ground level. I feel that high optimisim and low involvement is the reason for most of this mess, we all want change but dont do anything for that.

Sir as a stake holder in India's future and dreams I promise that i will always put my country first and I request to all who read this please put your foot down and try do the same.
We cant have our true warriors let down by our actions and more than that we should not leave our future generations with disconnect and disillusioned.

Sir thank you for being a dedicated Indian and also a thought provoking writeup.

Am with you on that....
Lets all come together and before taking any action just talk to ourselves and say...Is my action making my country a better place or worse..
Randeep i dont think I need to thank you for joining in .. cause I know this is your country as well and I know you love it as much as I do..

Just hope more of us see it in the same light...

Somebody up there wake up!

General Thapan has made a very salient point about the death of morality. Without it there can be no trust and teamwork, which lies at the core of any thrust for excellence.

And if we are not engaged in the pursuit of excellence then all this 'India Poised' stuff is a chimera.

MORALITY
by niki surabi on Feb 02, 2007 02:35 PM

Morality has not disappeard from our country. But it degraded considerably. While the near 2 digit growth of the economy has made us an economic super power, it has in its wake fuelled a lot of negetive things. Its upto us country men to stop this slide of moral degradation. Another thing that is conspiciously missing is manners, especially among the younger brigade. Today except in the very best schools, not much attention is given to developing good manners. All the time & resources are devoted to gaining the maximum marks at the plus-2 level.
Any all is not lost. Like Lt.General Thapan, there are many Indians who are siezed of the situation & course correction is in process.

Respected General, Your opinion candid, especially on the governments and politicians, our people will never learn from the harsh facts they have expoerienced over the years. As you said, every single politicians is raking havoc with the life of the poor people. Though Shri Ambedkar gave reservation for ten years, our politicians extended it to sixty years, to further their interest. Rediff should bringout more and more expressions from the people of these ilk. Without your permission may I give you Great Salami Sach. Thank you.

Morality has disappeared from India
by Vijay Kumar on Feb 02, 2007 02:25 PM

Absolute plain-speak by the Lt. Gen. And fully factual too. I wish this interview gets exposure in as many forums and other communication channels as possible for the youth ( why them, everone ) in the country to know the real truth as it were. Our country's economic development has very, very little to do with the politicians excepting for 'liberalisation' for whatever selfish reasons. It is actually the effort of the industry captains supported well by the knowledge power of the educated class. Truly, we have lost several outstanding soldiers' lives for the cause of somebody else's when we have our own plate of problems overflowing. The general deserves a special thanks for being factful and forthright - Vijay

Lt.Gen.M.L.Thapan
by Rajeev Kalra on Feb 02, 2007 02:24 PM

Well,it's pretty too late to introspect in retrospection after more than three decades. It happened,so be it so because fault finding at this stage is actually dishonouring those who laid their lives for this misssion.Morality, very well said General but which generation to be held responsible for not stopping it,those who have kept it in abeyance or those who took their eyes away frrom it whilst it started happening. It's all of us to be held responsiblee for such an immoral legacy which we'll leave behind for our next generation

Morality
by Mirgandra agarwal on Feb 02, 2007 02:21 PM  | Hide replies

I am retired teacher and like to see perfection in the society. The word perfection is in the books in modern India. Most of the Indians become moraly bankrupt, intellectually barren and socially selfish to the core. Administratively power coruping more and more. Little police man beats the Indian citizen mercilessly in India this we see on the television sreen in London everyday. In such atmosphere MAN lost his dignity completely. It is dignity that is that the greatest asset of man. If we lost dignity what left in man. An animal is better than such man.If such things happens in Europe that will be the invitation of Revolution. Administration and caste system are doing greatest harm to Indian development. Criminals are sent to the Parliament and Assemblies. God sace such India and grant wisdom their heads. If society is ill and malfunctioning. Then the of the society will be ruined.

Dear Mirgandra, pls accept my regards...... now can you tell me who all are responsible for making this society ill and malfunctioning. Are we really fighting to kill it and make a new start or just sitting in some other country and passing comments on what we see in television? If even we cannot, pls atleast donnot try to dicourage the people who are trying working in their contry.

Good interview
by Raghuraj Kadkol on Feb 02, 2007 02:20 PM

Thank you rediff for publishing this interview. Many among us will not have heard about unsung heroes of our country like Lt. Gen. Thapan. He is absolutely right when he talks about morality missing from our country. May be you should do a second round of interview to know more about his thoughts on our country in general, his thoughts for the future of our country etc. This is required as the present interview is only about India's wars. - Raghu
