u were friends all along... from ur kg classes till ur intermediate, as equals at all levels. but when it comes to joining engineering, u find that ur friend got a seat while u couldn't. then u start thinking about the reason why u didn't get... and it slowly dawns that he got it through reservation. it may not be immediate, but the feeling of hurt in you for not getting seat slowly develops. in the worst case, it might even show its ugly face breaking the bond between between u two. nope, i am not trying to say this applies to all, but i am sure this applies to most of the cases. and this is how India is breaking up.

The closest of pals with no prejudice towards anyone break up because of these reservations. This is increasing the gap between the younger generations than filling it. We all need to collectively work towards eliminating this social evil. Yes, u heard it right, reservation has become more of a social evil these days rather than a stepping stone.

with due regards to everyone, who are here either with reservation or without reservation. I've put this here with no bias towards any particular community.

You pass engg, do jobs and suddenly find your friends have found new oppurtinities, and they think your are oppressive, an idea that didn;t came all along they bullied you in school, when they didn't read, when they did things you clearly knew to avoid etc.

But this is the way it was supposed to work. The second class journos supported all these to show how great they are, I don;t find them pontificating when seckularism meant supporting terrorism. Some of them work from back office, throwing Gandhi photos. They remained second class through out.

My Personal Experience of Quota
by Karthik on Apr 25, 2007 12:23 AM  | Hide replies

I am sorry to tell this, But there is a reason on this, my experience on Quota system...in my school certificate, my dad has given the caste as OC (which means Other Caste, other than SC/ST, MBC, BC..etc I still do not know how many castes are there in India) I scored 80% in my 10th and 89 % in my 12th...both my frnd and I decided to give a try for a Engineering course and his certificate cited that he was a SC candidate...at that time I did not know the REAL meaning of the Caste column in the application form...it was a tough entrance...i scored 43 and him 34 percent respectively. We heard that the first mark is 57 (that was Architecture Exams) I was confident that I will get a free seat..But unfortunately I was offered Management Seat only. NOTE: i did not even get Payment seat. But my frnd got a payment seat luckily though...which was affordable... 13,000 rupees per semester...for me they demanded 2 Lac donation and the fee would be 40,000 (13,000 fee 27,000 building fund, lab fund etc...) i could not afford for it..Rather I joined computer science and I am a software engg for the past 3 years..

Please do not consider this personally, I would have become an architect and practising by now, If I was given an opportunity, still I am happy with what I am having..because I gave up my dream..but people are still out there without giving up their dreams and wandering to get a seat somewhere...bring out some justice in this..Provide education for financially weak people, avoid Quota system for reserving seats in Colleges and Govt offices...If a person is financially weak..provide him loan and time to repay the loan..instead of wasting money in Election banners, elections...POLITICIANS call people as Backward caste, but every one are equal...FORGET ABOUT THE PAST..Live for the present and dream about future...Jai HIND

The dirt bags who talk about the past do not see that India was ruled by foreigners for over thousand years. In the name of thousands of years nonsense, they discriminate against poor people NOW. This quota system has to stop, even if we start another independence moment. They talk about reservation for Muslims-what is Muslim contribution? Was't India divided to protect Muslim interest. These politicians destryoed Hinduism. False slogans became the order of the day.

people who oppose reservation care as much as about the well being of OBCs as anybody else. Opposing reservations is not same as opposing OBC castes themselves.

Thanks to all politicians for dividing the country on basis of cast. Its very clear that government intention is to gain vote only vote with this matter. At end they hardly bother about the students who studies or not. They have their kids enrolled in US/ Uk university and hence least bothered about us. I am scared that this debate will soon take a voilent turn. If arjun singh is so interested in upliftment of casts why didnt he got his daughter married to an lower cast person. Why did u choose son of nepal kingdom for his daughter.

Brahmins remained poor, protected religion and scriptures which makes us different from tribes of Somalia. Even when offered, they refused to be kings and refused live in luxury. They took the leadership and fought for Independence giving up their families. What did you do in the past 60 years of reservations? Becoming ministers, IAs officers with assured promotions, what did you contribute except spitting venom. I did not live thousands of years ago. I am living now. If you find one who lived in luxury at your cost, go after him. This thousands of year bull shit, shove it. The country has to uplift any every one irrespective of caste. Calling once self back ward for ever is demeaning and shameful. Pakistan was India too not long ago with the same BCs etc. What are you getting there. But that is ok-dumb jerk.

No To Reservation!
by Neo on Apr 24, 2007 12:27 PM  | Hide replies

Every time the reservation debate comes up, the question the self styled champions of OBC cause will rake up is the caste system and say why they cant become temple priests!!
First of all, OBC means Other Backward CLASSES. And NOT Other Backward CASTE! A poor Brahmin kid is as much a OBC as a poor dalit kid. Poverty and hunger strikes every one. So, just denying merit as a means for judging a students credibility to join a prestigious institute is according to me sacrilege.
Next question I have OBC quota supporters is, why should the rich amongst you get reservation? If the kids of rich OBCs, just while away their time and such vagabonds with barely any marks walk into IITs and IIMs On the basis of quotas, then is there any point in considering IIT and IIMs as quality institutions? Which recruiter will go to such institutes and recruit third grade candidates from there? I do not understand under what basis the government of India assumes that Reservations on basis of caste and creed, and that too as much as 50% of the seats, is not Racism and violation of the constitution. If a poor Brahmin kid with 90% marks does not get admissions to a good institute anywhere, and another similar poor dalit kid with 60% marks gets admission to choicest college, is this equality? The situation I have presented reminds me of Nazi germany!

Backward Classes
by emani reddy on Apr 24, 2007 12:26 PM  | Hide replies

Ram Kelkar has really thrown some light on the real problem of the issue...it is the backward class not caste...

here I would like to say few words about myself...I have come from so called forward caste..I completed my schooling in a village..my father could not afford a school fee of Rs. 400 per annum and therefore put me in a government school. I passed out X standard in 1992. I never got proper time to spend for studying. after school hours I used to go to field and during holidays I used to work in fields. my conditions did not permit me to play also..either work or study still I stood first through out schooling..

after tenth I did diploma..just because I got 51 st rank in that....after diploma my parents could not afford engineering...so I started doing jobs but conscience used to struggle a lot to do higher education..I read about CS in news papers and enquired...I enrolled for CS. I used to give tutions for my survival and completed CS with lot of struggles....

why I am narrating all this is I did not get any support from any angle either from family or goverment...I used to live in pathetic conditions during education..

at the same time...I have seen my friends...so called back ward classes they used to get schollar ships for them getting seat is not a problem after that they get good amount of schollar ships. I have seen friends after their education their join some course only for scholarships...

government is not bothered whether they really required it or not...they just make reservations and scholarships based on caste..this is really a crime...

may god give our politicians the conscience to make them to understand that there are innumerable poor people from forward castes..and innumerable rich people from so called backward castes..

In my village, when I generally assess how much percentage in forward caste are poor..astonishingly I found..more than 50% are poor...

the percentages may vary from place to place and caste to caste...but backwardness must be based on their economic class not on caste.

Current situation in India, is whoever is economically strong...he/she or that group is dominating in all areas, whether education, politics, business, jobs, etc...and whoever is economically weak are surrendering and becoming slaves..no matter which caste they belong to..

Sir ji, mr kalker will not understand ur problem. He has put his hands on his eyes and refused to see the real truth. The fact may be that either he want to gain cheap publicity or simply he would be planning to get into politics. I think education is useless for such people which they cant make their thinking mature.

Kudos to you my friend. This is the point all you OBCs out there. Caste does not determine anything in todays india. Poverty afflicts every one, and it is that we need to deal with. Giving blanket reservation on the basis of caste is useless. Does Deve Gowda's grandsons who drive around in BMWs be provided with the option of reservation? Does Karunanidhis grandsoms and daughters get such a reservation, when they are all billionaires? If these guys can get it, then why not a poor Brahmin kid in a remote village of UP. Is it that kids fault that he or she was born an upper caste. It is people like EPR Palem we need in India, and not idiots who want freebies in the name of quotas!

rather than taking reservation at that highest level..they should start at ground level by teaching kids who cant afford to study ..there caste may be immaterial but give opportunity to study at the lowest level and then have competition..you dont let people study initially and come suddenly to take quota hampers the competitive spirit..make better education system and have each and every child educated and then they themselves will understand how to compete rather than begging

OBCs and IITs/IIMs
by sudarshan kumar on Apr 24, 2007 11:41 AM

The percentage of OBC candidates who are finally selected for IITs and IIMs is always greater than 20%. It is as high as 50% in some of the courses/branches. If one could get all the data and analyze, then they will find that there is no need for putting the OBC reservations. They are in fact much better than most of the general category upper caste students.
If they want to put some reservations, then they should put the creamy layer stick and not the caste which is determined by birth....So that the disadvantaged sections of society can look forward to a quality education. However the quality education should be made available in the school such as good teachers and good schools for primary and secondary educations.
