V.R.Krishna Iyer interview
by Shiva on Aug 16, 2006 11:12 AM  | Hide replies

Mr. V R Krishna Iyer is not aware that Mata Amritanandamyi Math\\\\\\\'s Amrita Medical College is providing free treatments and costly operations to countless number of poor people. Her institutions are also providing free education to poor students. And to run such an institution serving the poor, you need money. And that money, the rich are willing to pay to educate their children. If Mr. Krisha Iyer wants to know, Amrita Hospital is running in a huge loss. Only by the grace of Amma and Her followers, the institution is kept running. It is very easy to criticize without knowing the facts.

And to talk of the countless other services Amma is doing for the poor, there is no end to it. And Amma has totally owned up the tsunami relief work in Kerala, in addition to Tamil Nadu and Srilanka.

Mr. V.R.Krishan Iyer is invited to Amma\\\\\\\'s Math in Amritapuri and get a first hand account of things happening here.

Dear Shiva,
I apologise for not reading your version properly. AMMA has been doing good work by providing education to poor students while charging heavily from those who can afford to pay.
I appreciate the efforts and once again sorry for my earlier response.
regards,
Raja Mohan

Dear Shiva,
Thanks for providing more information on charity work from respected AMMA.
However, the point mentioned in the article was about education being expensive. Why should one charge heavily and then do charity with that money?
I know a doctor in Secunderabad, who is Satya Sai Baba devotee. He charges people like me heavily because I am earning reasonably. At the same time, he charged nothing from many poor people in front of me. I also know a singer who earns lakh a day but sings free for some organizations. I appreciate the efforts from respected AMMA, but expect that the school which her trust runs can offer education to other people as well instead of restricting to only rich people. I understand there are practical difficulties because rich people send to expensive schools only to ensure that all the neobours of their kids belong to same class. But it is not impossible. At the same time, I agree that it is AMMA's trust who decide what is good and what is wrong.
At the end, I also want to tell that when I was running a professional course, I charged heavily from NRI's in dollars but reasonable amount from Indian residents. We ran that way for 3 year

Its fashionable to criticize Nehru for all our ills. But you need to think a little hard to be rational and realistic. Britishers came to India for business and trade and what they became and when they left we all know. In 1947 the overwhelming majority opinion was against inviting ang foreign power to invest in India after its experience of the britishers. We needed to create large scale industries on our own as no private intervention was possible in such a large scale. At the time of independence we didn't even produce a needle.Nehru had a vision. He was not a rigid man. At that time he gave a call to develop scientific temper. All the atomic research, IITs and IIMs were started in his time. Mind you, Only one power had become a superpower in such short span of time and that was USSR. It took her only 30 years to achieve that status. US and Britain took nearly 150 years to achieve this sucess. Not only India but every country that got independence follwed that policy including China. Had Nehru lived more he would have certainly changed his economic policy. It was his daughter, Indira who mad a mess of Indian economy. Reforms should have started slowly back in mid 70s itself.

our constitution
by saurabh on Aug 16, 2006 01:48 AM

i really wish our constitution was not written by the people who had written it. they were good honest patriotic people and they wrote it thinking that the other citizens would be like them and so everyone will follow it.
i really wish someone with a not so patriotic a fervor was involved with writing this document so the dishonest people could not take advantage of it so easily.

Youth can change India
by labrea on Aug 16, 2006 12:28 AM

Justice Iyer may be a great constitutional lawyer but he's still an old socialist fart. Socialism as an ideology has been dumped the world over, and no matter what he says, it takes money to make money, and nothing good comes free - there are no free lunches. Nehru's destructive 'socialism' had emasculated the economy and pauperized the nation, creating a nation dependednt on Sarkar and the good graces of an all pervasive corrupt monstrosity called the Permit and License Raj. And worse, Gandhi's naieve and myopic 'village economy' model would have pushed India backwards right into the middle ages. For the first time in ages, India is headed in the right direction - she only need unity of purpose and effective governance, accompanied by vigorous reforms, and unbiased and evenhanded enforcement of her laws - rather than the dictates of politics. Yes, youth can and will change India, but have they been taught the rights and obligations of good citizenship, civic duty etc., or will they be churned out like money-hungry cogs in a huge wheel of selfish greed?

Only New Generation Can Change India?
by Raj Kumar on Aug 16, 2006 12:26 AM

It was a pleasure reading the words of a committed man.

It is a common failing to seek a new beginning when we are dissatisfied with results. Perhap it is wiser to do now what must be done.

Justice Iyer desires the pursuit of excellence within the ambit of the constitution instead of the pursuit of wealth. It is easy to despair the absence of an attempt at excellence but that is not true.

Newspaper reports indicate the Cabinet Secretary is keen to adopt measures for excellence. Very very few administrations have succeeded since the art of administration was first conceived by Kautilya ~323 BC. This is because of total dependence on human energy for the Organisation, Drive, Discipline and the Passion needed. Indian Administration has a great history but is today overwhelmed by change.

We have the demand and the funds in form of MPLADS to search for alternative energy. IT offers it. Perhaps our greatest resource is the generation about to retire for it has experienced change and IT is available for the support required to define and solve problems. All that needed is a state mechanism to encourage the possible. We have the very PM we need to set productive minds free.

Education is now priced in India.
by P.Krishnarao on Aug 15, 2006 11:46 PM

It is a pathetic situation in India after privatising the education institutes. Middle class parents can't educate his son or daughter into courses likeMBBS,MBA,Engineering and Post graduation.,even after securing I class. Is there any solution ? How long this generation have to suffer ? In the present situation only children of politicians and rich people can survive and youth of this generation ( youth belong to politicians and rich people ) may not take any interest to change India from the present senario.

The youth can change India.
by Kersie Madon. on Aug 15, 2006 11:36 PM

India's illness are too chronic to cure. Whoever tries to cure will not be allowed to do. 1st, we have to undo all wrong we have deliberately done to win votes. Its not that we don't know what ails India. Its simply that we want all that is wrong for our convenience sake. We all have to swallow the bitter pill but we don't want to swallow. Nothing can be achieved without strict discipline & character which we sadly don't possess. Merits must be rewarded to teach others the importance of education. Today, our Govts are forced to speak only what we like to hear hence, we get the Govt. we deserve. I find India a delight to rule but who will allow that nor does our Govt. respect their chair. How true were Nani Palkhivala's words when he had said that there is no true leader in the world today. To make a humble beginning everyone must remember that honesty is the best policy & treat work as worship. Truth & justice must prevail at all costs & all of us, right from our PM to the begger have to contribute to our country in our own little way. A good nuisance free citizen is a big contribution we all can make.

Kersie P. Madon.
