A salute to mumbaikars
by S.Mohan on Jul 28, 2005 09:58 PM

It is people helped each other not the BMC(shiv sena) or ADMN(cong and ncp)it is the local people of the area who helped us come out of the water by forming human chains and helped us from potholes. I want mumbai to be seperate state and controlled by a eligible man not these useless parties.

My Experience In Mumbai Rains
by Reema Bachani on Jul 28, 2005 09:34 PM

All has been said about the Spirit of Mumbaikars already. I would like to add my bit. Without being elaborate, I would like to tell you that I started in my car at 8.00 am from Khar and reached my Residence (Jogeshwari) in 13 hours!! The residents of S.V. Road, Khar were soooo kind and helpful. It really touched us. More so, because they NEED NOT have done it. They could have sat in their homes and watched the scene from their windows / balconies. But they came out on the roads to help us. We were stranded in Khar S.V. Road for almost 12 hours. By then, the roads had been cleared so well that the drive from Santacruz to Jogeshwari was a cakewalk. And I am sure, more than our Authorities, it was the citizens who did all that they could and guided us beautifully throughout our way.
Salutations and thanks to all of you people who went out of your way to help us. And thanks for the Biscuits, Tea, Water, Snacks and even allowing us to use your house washrooms.
God Bless all of You. Keep up your good work and "never-say-die" attitude Mumbaikars

TJ's response
by Sasanka on Jul 28, 2005 09:23 PM

I completly agree with TJ's response.
Prevention measures need not be always one of those 'technical disaster mitigation plans' for those fire fighters, swimmers, 'army' are required.
They can even be like
just telling people to go to upper places- they will go
warning the people again and again not to move out - they will follow
announcing the methods how they can rescue the others - there are lot of highly educated people to take care
closing schools etc before itself when you see the hard clouds coming. this is only possible if we have a good weather warning system.
and many more things..

The wish that came true
by Reema Nair on Jul 28, 2005 09:23 PM

They say " Be careful when u wish for something, it may come true". Thats exactly what happened with me. I always used to envy my friends, whose parents used to go for work, and they used to sit at home all alone or call their friendz and have a party.I never used to get a chance likethat, because my Mom is a house wife. I always used to wish that atleast for one day, i want to be alone, and have a blast. And you know what, my wish came true, and it turned out to be the most horrible day of my life. My Mom left for the hospital(Nanavati), to see my grandma, at around 10 am, at that time the skies were clear. The moment my Mom left, I made my fav. snack, and sat down to watch TV.. there were some real cool movies, like Jhankar beats, Golmaal...i was really happy, not having the slightest idea, of what havoc the rains have created....it was raining heavily, but i did'nt take that seriously, moreover, as my area(chincholi bunder) is on a higher side... there was no water-logging here.At around 4:30, i started getting ready for my classes..at that time my Papa called, and inquired about Mom, and became a little worried as she has not reached home... i told him not to worry, as she usually comes by 5. Dad yelled at me when I told him, that i was leaving for classes, and told me not to go any where as i don't know the conditions outside. I was happy, and sat down in front of the TV again...but my happiness was short-lived because at that time...the electricity went KAPUT.
When it comes to housework...i m a LOSER.I don't know what is kept where..after searching the whole house, i managed to get one thin candle, and my 20 numbered birthday candles and borrowed one from my neighbour. It was getting late and there was no news about Mom.My father and my relatives were calling continously to ask whether Mom has reached and to keep all doors and windows closed. It was now, that i started realising that the situation is serious.I made some chapatis and omllete for myself( which is only thing i know to make, from that moment i decided i need to learn cooking) and for Mom and Dad. Dad some how reached till Bandra, but then he had to go back to office, as there was no other option. I got some news of the city....thanx to the radio, in my mobile. But then the communication got hampered because there was no network coverage, and my cell's batteries became low.I tried calling the hospital a lot... but all in vain. I was really worried for Mom, as there was no news abot her. I had no idea , whether she is in hospital, or stuck in traffic,as for Dad i know where he is, and he will be safe in office.I sat in my front room and was awake the whole night, because if i sleep, i won't know if my Mom knocks the door(no, electricity...the bell won't work). My relatives helped me alot , by continously callin me the whole night.
Next day, to add to my worries, there was no water and my friend called up and said that she heard two people have drowned near the parle-santacruz area.I started worrying more for Mom, but then i calmed my self sayin that " no news is good news". Finally around 5 pm, Mom came home, she was at the hospital the whole night, Dad came wlkin from Bandra, he reached around 8pm.Finally everything was back to normal. from now on i am going to think twice before i wish for something

it is very sad thta rains have created such a big mess in mumbai and i pray god for mumbai to get back to normalcy.

HATS OFF MUMBAIKAR
by prabhu on Jul 28, 2005 07:54 PM

I truly pray, from the bottom of my heart, for all those who have been affected because of the rains and pray that the spirit that Mumbai has shown in the past keeps alive the same way and Mumbai comes back to normal as very.I thank all the youngsters who contributed and helped the peoples who were struggling hard in the rain. I am in dubai right know when i thought to check my mail suddenly i saw heavy rain in mumbai...Then i went on thiniking it might stop in one hour. Then i saw it was major seems like Tsunami. Then i prayed to to god to stop the rain but the rain doesn't but god is helped in other way with the help of teenagers.Well done to who supported and resuced the peoples from heavy rain. The MegaCity,It did not go down even too the mightest rainfall, wat the hel the people doing who need to involve in this. And where is Ash's,SRK and BB were doing, I feel only in the movies this buggers react in the tuff situation, but not in the real life...I believe they even never went on to reality!!!!Lets make a pledge towards them and think they r just useless (as usal)
A sincere Appreciation and thanks to all mumbaikar..This is what we call THE SPIRIT OF MUMBAI.
Jaihind...
