Spirit of Humanity
by sandeep on Jul 29, 2005 12:34 PM

This disaster throws light on various aspects of Mumbai. On the negative side is Mumbai's inadequate infrastructure. On the positive side is the spirit of Mumbai where many People have risked their own lives to save other people. I would like to call
this the Spirit of Humanity instead. Its nothing new to see people come forward to help unknown people anywhere in the world. But the fact is this happens only during disaster or natural calamity.I would like to ask those people who were the part of this disaster, to those who rescued unknown people and they thanked you , to those who were rescued by unknown person, to those who were just watching this horrible play of nature that " How did you feel" during that moment. I know there must be fear,Happiness,satisfaction,pain,... and above all you realised the importance of human life. All I want to say is please "Keep up spirit 24x7 so that happiness spreads all over.. Love everyone all the time.. Keep away from hatred,anger...
In the last I would like to pay my tributes to those who died iin this incident and the 'Salute to all the Mumbaikars" for their great showing...

This calamity changes my views about mumbai & mumbaites
by roly tiwari on Jul 29, 2005 12:24 PM

Its a great disaster and a calamity of god to the people of mumbai.. but this changes my views about mumbai and mumbites , as what I thought is that mumbai is a metro city.city of bhai logs and criminal.. glamourwith no social valuesteens used to spend there time in pubs and clubs where a
simple man can not survive at least I can not adjust myself there..

But after reading so many articles from the different people in rediff..my heart was full of tears that I was so wrong, the way people helps the other/needy it was really unbeleivabkle hats off to them. There also a kinds peoples lived to cares the humanity and equally can feel the agony of others. Even I havent seen such a helping hand in kanpur where I think simple and kind hearted people lives, I apologize for what I though but now I proud of u all mumbites thanks and love u all!!!!

Salute to Mumbaikars...sure, booing to politicians, alright, but there are few those selfless heros who always stand tall with us in our most difficult times and here are we who always take their heroics for granted everytime...

They are our brave Jawans, our IAF, Army and Navy who we once again are forgetting to acknowledge for their daredevils as they quitely save lives after lives. Lets salute and thank our brave Men-in-Uniform- IAF, army and navy for the great resque and relief operation they are carring out. We are proud of you sirs.

Jai Hind!

Where were the Authorities??
by Rohan Murray on Jul 29, 2005 11:47 AM

Kudos to the Mumbaikar spirit. It was truly heartening to see the poor middle and lower class families offering all support to the travellers stuck in deluge.
Individuals at Ghatkopar, Kurla(w) station road were forcing people to stop and eat which was very encouraging. The police and other authorities were just sitting in their vehicles and demanding things from all the shops. They were least bothered about the individuals struggling on the roads. We had passed a vehicle where Mr. Ajit Pawar was stuck at Chembur, I dont think he came out of his Lexus during the entire ordeal so much for the people we have made our representatives. No politician or their families could be seen anywhere on the roads. Even today the 29th the BMC has not commenced any clean up operations. The disaster management committee should atleast act now.

Brgds,
Rohan Murray

Infrastructure and Communications
by Deepak on Jul 29, 2005 10:59 AM

Hi,

The earlier messages that I read pretty much sum up the feelings of this city.
In all this chaos, let us try to learn something.
The meaning of disaster management plan is to contain the damage done by any calamity(natural or manmade) to the minimum.
I just want to know who are the members of this official disaster management committee for Mumbai and what were the steps that these people took to help the people?
I think, we as the citizens of Mumbai, atleast deserve this much accountability from these people for the worst 2 days ever faced by almost any Mumbaikar.

Communications:
I just want to say that, whatever may be the reason for the continuous failure of the mobile phone networks, they failed miserably. We can understand networks down for , say, 5 hrs, but for continuously 3 days, if the phone systems are down, then, that phone company should shut shop.
When u say, \"wherever u go, our network follows\", live up to what u say. I can safely say that the dog in the advertisement would have been of more help in this nightmare than that network.
At the end, I would like to salute the spirit of Mumbai which will see us through.

Great Bombay
by H.S.Anand on Jul 29, 2005 10:28 AM

My Dear Mumbai,

I lived in Bombay during 1976-78 as a young 23 yrs old engineer and you gave me first salary of Rs. 500/-pm. You taught how to brave difficulties in life. You also taught how to be loving, friendly, affectionate, self confident and reliant, partke in others' miseries and lead a life beyond your wife and children. You told me how much life exists beyond one's family.

Today after 29 years of leaving Bombay( Mumbai),I have not forgotten those precious lessons and still practice them- and probably for the remainder of my life.
I am greatly distressed at the nature's fury and the havoc caused to my Muimbai. May Kolhapur Mahalakshmi bless AMCHI MUMBAI in this hour of distress.

I also read and see on TV how courageously you faced the tragedy in the last three days. You faced it like ONLY you can do it in entire world. It may take some more time for the scars to heal but you know that these are temporary and the life ahead is more pleasant.

SALAM BOMBAY FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL COURAGE AND COMRADRIE.

H.S. ANANDATHEERTHA,
JAYANAGR,BANGALORE.

Rajesh Patkar
To Medha Patkar
by Rajesh Patkar on Jul 29, 2005 10:01 AM

We would all like to know where was Ms. Medha Patkar and her colegues who were after government against their policy of cleaning MUMBAI. I have not seen any one from her side helping the Taxpaying Mumbaikar who suffered the most. After paying the taxes that money is being spent on the rehablitation on those people who are not paying a penny to the government. It is the time for all of us to ask these so called social called Social Workers that why we should be burdened with the cost of this. Let these people go back to their respective places from where they come.

I really salute to all those who have worked all through 48 hours to restore the life of Mumbai and request the government to take up the cleaning drive of all slums in Mumbai and do not bend to the pressure from the so called Social Workers.

The cleaning the city is the only solution to any future calamity.

KL
stop pointing fingers and help!
by KL on Jul 29, 2005 09:18 AM

It was really sad to read to read some messages on rediff diary that had people blaming everyone else- from the gov, the police and even the film stars. umm..please refresh my memory- which one of the above mentioned groups controls the rains?
Someone wrote about the 'damn yankees' 'preparing in advance' for the rains..hmm, so i guess it was just about 100 odd 'unprepared' yanks who were rendered homeless in the last round of torrential rains on the west coast huh? or lets line up all the prime ministers of Thailand, Indonesia etc agianst a wall and shoot them for allowing a Tsunami to hit! How dare they?!
Come on people, reality check time here- NO ONE controls the weather and it's really not helping anyone right now. I understand you are concerned about your friends and families in Mumbai but the time for finger pointing and name calling is not now.Now its time to use platforms like this to get help and assistance to those still stuck. Let people get help first , the blame-game is not going to help anyone.Instead lets look ahead and make sure that there is a public assistance system in place for any future calamities. After all, sorry to point it out but we are only human!
