musharraf is simply following a mixture of opportunism and balancing act.the country has been effectively sold to the americans.there is hardly any development and there is no future for the common people there.it is a matter of time before some islamic fanatics take control of the country.one or two clever people at the top, unelected as they are , will not be able to save the country .

If you remember the article you had posted by Gurusamy few days back stating - "our country is run by Karma and not by law and order" - You will find a distant but the only possible solution.

There is no way you can make a change other than reminding and giving Pakistan many chances to feel good and there by hope the feeling good and therfore the internal change is a contagious one.

Give them a chance, so a few of them who see a future for Pakistan, can do something about it. Articles like this are not going to help the cause.

Though I must agree that the few statistics you have stated at the end are very possible implications and therfore we have to be prepared.

Indo-Pak

Swapans'article rings a much needed warning bell in the general mood of euphoria about the recent developments in India-Pak relation. There won't be anything more foolish than to believe even for a moment that Pakistan will abandon its Kashmir agenda. But the fact is that India has lost a lot of ground in Kashmir because of its own inability to recognize the Kashmiri aspirations and due to our foolish policies. India need time to regain the lost grounds. Pakistan certainly is aware of this fact. And it will not sit idle and watch India moving towards that. Hence, one should always expect reccurring troubles in the Valley. How are we going to counter them is the question everyone on this side of the border will be asking.
It is amazing that Swapan castigates the misguided Jihadi componant in the Pak society and at the same time is unable to see the equivalent to it in our own backyard. VHP and some componants of the "Sangparivar" is no better than the Jihadis in their mindset and their deeds. The driving force behind all such organizations is the psyche of "tribal band" a vestige of our prehistoric past. It is even more sad that many normal inteligent people can not trancent i

Pakistan overtures

I agree with Dasgupta on his fears over Pakistan's
new found warmth. Pakistan has to go miles to prove their genuinity to the Global community, if they have to be accepted as a trusted ally against terrorism. It is not enough that they are against terrorists warring US/UK alone (though it is evident that at this point of time their economy demands substantial financial and material help from Uncle Sam & Co) but they should denounce terrorism of any kind.

Swapan,

I consider that devil has understood how to exploit his situations to his advantage. We as India, forever gullible are obviously mistaking its brotherhood & change of heart.

Wars from now on are not going to be fought on battlefields but will be fought based on knowledge, Intellectual Properties, diplomacy & the country's economic might. All of that which Pak currently lacks. I think Mush is very intelligent & knows that he has all the trump cards. But with one sweep of fetching laden will erase all the negativity, earn money & praise from US.

Flirtations with India is a part of its +ve image-building exercise. And if flirtations earn you money than why not? The cricket is a mere business trick to earn money. Cricket will bring in the media who too are so gullible will only report candy-floss and will write odes of pak's change of heart and the cycle will roll on!

And who knows how much can India bite-on? Pak are hoping that Indians will in the moment of 'Mushy-ness' might concede favourable positions, pacts, eventually Kashmir and blunder on our own, like Nehru?

The monkey, however old he gets, will never forget how to jump!

They have not really got hurt in the whole process.. unless u get heart, u don't learn and don't mend ur ways.. and instead they have got away with murder of lakhs of indians with no loss of their lives...

they need to be inflicted some damage where it hearts so that they think twice before starting a kargill like thing again and going back on their words..

Fundamental point: they don't know how it hurts .. and they have managed to hurt us all over and it's painful. Till they know how it hurts, they would not have any motivation for fixing relationship.

Pursuit of peace for electoral dividends!
by Gauzbig on Mar 29, 2004 04:03 PM

SD makes some very interesting comments. A good analysis though am afraid he pulls his punches when he has the issue on the ropes.

Pakistan has so far not proved trustworthy in all the years they have been dealing with us.

While we can probably hope that compulsions may force Pakistan to finally mend thier ways we cannot fully let down our guard or mislead our people to believe that all is hunky dory.

Jingoism and hubris should not drive our agenda either.

There really should be some circumspection and a carefully calibrated response instead of going ga ga on propaganda hoping that this will reap electoral dividends.

The bus journey to Lahore was taken by Pakistan as a ticket to ride to Kargill! To turn ostrich like and to see only virtues in Musharraf the navigator to Kargill is a dangerous game.

Unfortunately electoral compulsions in India are forcing the government to look the other way and in fact give a clean chit to Musharraf and his government. One hopes that the security of our people will not be compromised by a complacent government.

One hopes that SD castigated this Government for its dereliction !! That unfortunately was not to be !!!

Musharraf Musharraf Musharraf Musharraf Musharraf , after who is he , what is he & what he has done for his country only arms, aummniations & terrorist hideouts. If you watch carefully the cricket stadiums the whole media is covered by Indian Brand Makers like Hero Honda, BABA Zarda etc........

The score boards are the same old ones used in 50 's & 60 's.

I personally feel if Pakistan comes under the shelter on India they will have a re-BIRTH in world.

General Musharraf
by S C Singh on Mar 29, 2004 03:50 PM

We must be making fools of ourselves if we fail to understand that whenever he has a distinguished gathering of listeners, be it the press conference in Agra or the India Today conclave, Musharraf never fails to mock our credentials as a secular democracy. He might have conceded to denounce terrorism in the joint statement, but was back to his favourite rhetoric in describing the terrorism in Kashmir as a legitimate freedom struggle. As a matter of fact, it would be to our own advantage if the General is replaced by an openly hostile regime of Mullahs. At least the world would be viewing that regime in the same manner as India.
