MANAGEMENT BY MBA.
by J.N. Kini on Jun 10, 2004 10:36 PM

I am glad the way it turned up for Mani. But can he tell me if the MBA really helped him enhance his working skills ? I am associated with these Scandinavian companies in Sweden and Norway, who do not recruit MBAs. Instead, they send some of their employees who been with them for a few years for MBA courses. The reason, to fine tune their working skills, so that they would be much useful to the company they are working for.Few months back on a flight, one young MBA offered to take care of my business for a part of the profits, so that I could enjoy my golf or fishing and the two rounds of scotch in the evenings, better. When I told him I would enjoy all that only if I was working myself, he asked me what I enjoy doing the best in my office. I said typing addresses on envelopes on a manual typewriter, and sticking the envelopes and he thought I was crazy. Just a few days back, I had a very short Mail from him " Thanks "!!!!

Appearing the written Test and subsequently going through GD&PI is great experience ,many times it is told to u by your friends to take leadership in the group and u start speaking more you are asked to give chance to others also,u have to manage the way to overpower others by giving them chance and proving that they have little to speak on topic but I have stock with me,THAT WAS WHAT I HAD DONE 10 YEARS BACK agree with others if your opinion matches with him but still with your own view point but not blind acceptance. In personal interview some body may bias but here you do your work smartly rest live to them.

Fish market situation
by Vamsi.. on Jun 10, 2004 07:02 PM

1st of all a very good article on GD's.jus to add a bit more.usually these GD's r fish market scenes...the reason being people think speaking more means gettng more marks....wud be very helpful if the panel members cud specify the parameters on being pople r being judeged....some more tips for the Participants...

-Dont argue with anyone...if someone argues with you jus turn your attention to those who r quiet...

-Be gooood listeners for christ's sake plzzz.

-Encourage the quiet ones to speak up...take their views....

-Dont point fingers.......remember...every time u point a finger,4 other fingers r pointing at u....

-Dont Cut others short....speaks bad about u...each person has enuf time to speak and let the others speak...A win-win situation.....Isnt it??

Unless you speak you will not be heard! And unless you are heard no one will get to know all the wonderful ideas you have! But to be heard above all these coaching class whiz kids you have to throw all your manners to the winds!

A hard choice - Atleast in your case GD and Interview were taken together so you still had some chance provided the powers that be were convinced you were making some effort to contribute.

What about those selection process where the GD is a knockout stage in itself before the interview? You are finished!

What experience Uttam went through was the same with my case.I gave my GD/PI in 03 and found the same kind of people as Uttam did.Its actually a shocking fact to hear that the person who starts the GD first will get more points which is a big time misunderstanding by aspirants. Its not the air time which one use but the quality of the matter he is letting out..

Early starters may some time lead the group in a wrong direction in case of an abstract topic which would make the whole group losse points for no reason.

Great Article
by Ravindra Pushker on Jun 10, 2004 05:24 PM

Dear Mondambalam R Maniputran,

You are absolutely right. The objective of GD is to reach at some final conclusion. But i think nobody reaches at any conclusion. Only contradicting others and showing oneself better than others. I have faced this two times. But you are lucky that you got selected and I didnt. Theoretically what you are saying is 101% right but practically what i felt from my experience is that the thing which matters is the aggresive nature, leading role and how much u can talk non stop etc. May be this is my view but thats what i felt. But I appreciate your view a lot. I wish that all GDs are like this.

Its all part of the game!
by Senthil Vadivu on Jun 10, 2004 05:02 PM

Sir,

You have just attended a GD and PI, when you complete your MBA and enter the corporate day in and day out you will find such fools everywhere you go. May be even with the CEO of the company. Its all just part of life and you have to enjoy it, taking it very lightly!
