bandhs
by K Parameswaran on Jul 24, 2004 08:11 AM

Yes, it is not right to take away the right of political parties to express their dissent. But bandhs are not the only way to express dissent; rather, they are the only way of expressing dissent and raising demands that put the majority of common people in dire difficulties. The High court of Maharastra has done the right thing by making the parties reponsible pay up for the damagae caused by the agitators.

Political parties have got NO right to decide a bandh ... who are they to decide if I should go to work or not? .. go to a shopping mall or not ?

Millons of $ are lost when these stupid parties call a strike and thats not all ... more often then not these strikes turn violent and cause loss of human life ... who is responsible for it ? They should be held responsible for it ... and punished for calling the bandhs ...

Bandhs are not peaceful way of collective bargaining and hence is a criminal activity. Any body involved in criminal activity are to be trialed and punished. The victims are to becompensated.

Stupid political parties
by nag on Jul 24, 2004 05:41 AM

Stupid dumb political parties - Dont you understand that, YES dissent is your right to protest, but go ask any small kid on the street what they feel about these bandhs. You guys have made a mockery of bandhs. It is a show of muscle strength.

The high court is right. Actually, I would say that the court should instruct that there should be bunch of leaders from each political party who should be held responsible for irresponsible bandhs.

Mr.Naqvi, go talk about rights somewhere else..

Ban the bandhs
by Gopal on Jul 24, 2004 03:17 AM

Yeah. Why not? You get votes from us and you very well have the right to ask us not to work on a day bringing down the city/country to halt. Supreme court should condemn these parties and uphold the decision. If possible, it has to ban the strikes and bandhs which the political parties have started to use for their selfish motives.
Even in this particular case, the right way to answer the terrorist strikes is to come back to normalcy on the next day, not by holding a strike or bandh.

Every normal citizen also has equal right to live peacefully!
by B.Gautam on Jul 24, 2004 03:13 AM

It is high time that various political leaders realize that country's peace and harmony are most important than anything else that is used to project their own cheap popularity! Violence and crime are perhaps let lose in the process of a bhandh deliberately primarily to make it a head line news subsequently! Though such leaders are aware of the fact that only peace and harmony can bring about a swift progress to the country and hence people's happiness, they impair the developmental activities knowingly due to the fact that development will snatch away their importance and fame! If at all they are sincere in their objective to register a protest against governmental inaction in any people's welfare matters, they can conduct a bandh in a peaceful manner without obstruction to any one against his or her will to take part in any such bandh! Any bandh leading to any damages or losses to either property or life cannot be a right of any party as they should realize normal citizens also do have a right to live without being harmed in any way!

What did the people benefit from the bandh...
by Nikunj on Jul 24, 2004 03:08 AM

Tell me one thing.. What did these very parties do for the people who were injured/killed by the blasts except for calling a bandh. Look at the damage the bandh has caused to the economy of Bombay, of Maharshtra and thereby of India. Hundreds or thousands of lakhs of rupees worth of oppurtunities must have been lost during this one day of unscheduled work stoppage. Lets take a poll and find out if anyone of the affected or their family members wanted to have a bandh.
This is just another of those things that political parties have used to get some free press coverage. Do they really care about those people who were affected by the blasts? The blasts which were the work of some terrorist organization had just one aim, to disrupt the normal life of people and they are not succeeding in doing that. Indians are a very resilient lot, but it is the political parties who are helping them out by declaring bandhs and disrupting normal public life, thereby aiding the terrorists. If they file an appeal in the Supreme court, the supreme court should not only upheld the lower courts decision but also brand these parties as terrorist organizations and put their leaders behind bars.
