The article is good. It refers to lots of sources. Decent sources. True that there are cascading effects of Indian social system, from birth to all aspects of a person's life.
However, the counter to the argument put forward by the writer is just one. "Can one wrong can be undone by another wrong? What is happening is no doubt wrong but whatever is proposed is right? What is the idea of ultimate social state? Is not it that there should not be any difference on the basis of birth, be it caste, creed, race, religion, geography or any other demographic criterion? Is not the idea that there should not be any privilege than one earned through intellectual capability?
In this background the article seems to be just another reactive piece written very superficially. No offence meant. I know that the writer is a renowned scholar, still....

Ranjan.

HI ,
This is an Infoscion replying to the message written by an intelligent guy.
If you talk in term of Stats, which everyone approves more of, this year, Infy received 1500000 applications for job. (Its 5 zeros). 47000 could clear the written exams. And after interview my company hired 12000 odd people. They work solely on merit basis and not on these mean things like caste etc. Definitely anybody who has competency in him can come forward and compete to secure a job. Why don't you come and try your merit?
People like these are sick. Just wan to blame others and shield themselves from their own responsibilities and their low merit.
Shame on guys like you who point fingers on others but do nothing yourselves.

India Cascading Inequalities
by Mark on Aug 13, 2004 12:19 PM  | Hide replies

Why are you comparing India with the US economic/people equation. The need for companies like Ford, the Wall street journal to specfically reserve seats for minority groups is justified for the sole reason that the minority groups in the US ar "highly professnioally qualified, educated and skilled".Which means college educated, professionally competant.
Indian minority community whether the Adivasis, Dalits,OBC's SCST are not. your Article is intended to create negative atitude in people and is all out to fuel a racist war.I dont agree with the fact that you cant get a job, if your qualified, basic skilled and in the eye of a possible employer competant then anyone get get in.Yes, they arent too many jobs and if your begining in life its tough. But just because you are a minority, OBC SCST you cant sit with 35%marks and expect to become the CEO of company. I am a Christian from Bangalore.Am I a minority because of my religon?-NO.At the job market i compete PURELY ON MY CAPABILITY,EXPERIENCE&QUALIFICATIONS, not religon, cast, creed and color. To end recisim, inequalities and evils of the cast system start education with all levels of people and raise the education bar.

Good one, Mark. That's the spirit. If you beg, you'll get alms. God has given us brains and body to toil, not to beg. We should forget identities based on birth and compete positively.

Who is Praful Bidwai to dictate terms?
by ram on Aug 13, 2004 12:05 PM

Who is Praful Bidwai to dictate terms? Why do Communists represent the minoity unions in the organised sector and not the unorganised masses. The Left parties also protect interests of leftist elites.

Corrective measures suggested:-
by Sowmik on Aug 13, 2004 12:04 PM

These are the measures I feel the govt should implement :-
1) Standardise reservations across Govt. jobs only at the entry 15% max for underpriviledge that should be independent of caste and religion.
2) Make primary education free and compulsory for all upto class 10th.Promote the idea of State schools and locality schools keeping very high standard of the education.
3) Scholarships covering tution, and other expenses right from school - Graduation-Post Graduation for all classes. When US govt gives them to foreign students covering the entire expenses why can't we give to our own countrymen.
4) Representation will come by active involvement of the entire society and not just the govt policy.Had reservation been the only single handed tool then by this time lot of problem should have been solved. Thanks to V.P Singh in a last min effort to save his govt he issued this mandal commission.
5) Key and mother of all woes and problems in this ocuntry is population.Govt has to come constructively with a law on this.
6) Last but not the least "uniform civil code" a topic much hated by people like you , Congress and Marxist but the fact is "YES" we need this law.

India has cascading inequalities

I don't think there can be any logic for perpetual reservation. The very fact that our reservation policy has not been able to obliterate the need for reservation despite having a 56 years' existence, signifies that we cannot achieve our goal through reservation. We should stop giving reservation immediately to those either of whose parents have got the reservation benefit at any point of their lives. The cocept of creamy layer should be implemented in all sorts of caste-based reservation and there should be no reservation in job promotions.
To see how assertive our Dalit brethren have become (as contrasted with the strictures of Manusmriti which nobody reads), we only need to see the functioning in a Govt. Department. Even when a serious corruption charge is inquired into, the reply of a Dalit employee will surely contain - 'I'm being discriminated against due to being Dalit.' Or listen to leaders like Mayawati whose only excuse for indulging in wrongdoings is their caste identity.
Voluntary affirmative action combined with provision of quality social inputs like education and healthcare is the only way to bring about positive change.
