India has cascading inequalities
by Sanjay Narayanan on Aug 13, 2004 10:09 PM

Why does Bidwai try to obfuscate the subject in every debate he participates in? In the first 4 paragraphs, there is a strong implied statement that the newspapers discriminate based on the "varna system".

I have 2 points to make.
1). If you want to fix the system, you have to pinpoint the discrimination and fix it at that level. The reality is that the discrimination happens early on at the educational, social level. Forcing every employer to employ substandard workers is a recipe for doom. Doom for the employer, doom for the economy and ultimately, doom for everyone. The solution is to provide real equal educational opportunities to allow the disadvantaged lower caste members to make it purely on their own merit, which they have as much as anyone else.

2). The basis of reservation must be changed from being caste-based to being poverty/income-based. All the victims of oppression that Bidwai lists in his graphic examples will automatically fall under the new poverty/income-based reservation approach. What it will exclude are the many wealthy government servants who have already benefited from past reservation. It will also be truly caste-blind as the constitution demands.

dear friends i am sure there will be a lot of meritorious missiles against praful for his support for reservation by the meritorious.i just want to know what is merit.is not the demand for telengana vidarba nagalim kukiland etc a demand to become ?meritorious as they will compete only among themselves.so do we have to have demands of sudradesh kurmiland madiganadu.is there any absolute merit.any person who studies works in our country does it because of reservation by birth so is it wrong to ask for reservation within reservation kindly enlighten me meritorious souls

Yes, inequalities do exist, but the solution for that is not reservation in public or government or private sector. What is needed is that firstly an Uniform Civil Code which makes discrimination on any basis, other than merit punishable under the IPC.
Secondly no forms (Government or otherwise) should require the persons to fill in their religion or caste.
Thirdly there has to be a brain washing (if it can be called that) of the children to say that everybody is equal and that everybody is an Indian.
Fourthly we must change our attitude to manual labour. If somebody cannot study and pass examinations not point in making him a Doctor or Engineer which will only be detrimental to the country. Instead if he good at drawing or even good at something like stitching slippers he should be encouraged and should be paid enough for his labour within reasonable limits. (This does not happen today. We bargain saying what have you done for 5 Rs. I will pay only 2 Rs. although we may be earning 20000 plus salary.). This will ensure better distribution of money which is currently held by the "intellectuals".

Once people start growing economically in a honest way the society will automatically and people will start respecting each other and at the same time there will be no detioration of the quality of people serving others.
We have to realise by introducing reservation we are trying to fit round pegs into square holes and vice versa. It will not work.
Instead round pegs need to be put into round holes and square ones into square and each should be appreciated for what they are round or square should be immaterial. What should matter is that the person is honest and has integrity.
Reservation is definitely not the solution.

Reservation Justified????
by Anirban Roy on Aug 13, 2004 02:33 PM  | Hide replies

Well i strongly disagree with the views expressed by Praful Bidwai here.Does reservation is a single magic pill which will get India rid of all her problems regarding discrimination? Then why this discrimination still continues even after 57 years of independence even though reservation is there right from independence?
In the original constitution it was clearly mentioned that reservation will be in place till 1960 and for maximum another 10 years "AT THE MOST" depending upon the suggestions of a review committee. But our self serving politicians have kept on extending this period of reservation for their own vested interests.
Our constitution envisages a society based on merit and not caste.Reservation was only supposed to be used as a tool initially for upliftment of disadvantaged. But unfortunately its more used for vote bank politics.
The result of reservation is all there to see.Instead of bridging the gap between the castes it has actually helped in alienating them further.
And regarding reservation in private sector --- well please leave that sector alone which is performing phenomenally when compared to so called reserved government sectors.
Think Bidwai shud join BSP!

Dear friend, I would be happy even if you name one invention made by our `meritorious` pvt sector. Today if the pvt sector is able to function it is only bcause of the insfrastructural support provided by the public sector. Perhaps you would be surprised to know that all the major pvt sector cos in india are NET FOREIGN EXCHANGE SPENDERS. Has the pvt sector ever given one product or service which is exclusive and worlds best? sorry! NAH! the cybercoolies are in demand bcause their services come cheap. The pvt sec has always asked for protection from competition since independence, besides its emplyoment policies are not without reservations based on nepotism, shifaris, caste and communal affiliations, otherwise why do we find dominant proportions of `higher castes` marwaris, gujratis, tambrahms, parsees, etc., in firms/cos owned and controlled by their respective clans. The pvt sec is also run on public money, hence it is its onus to shoulder the burden towards nation building, after all its the question of 80% of our population which also consumes its goods and services (however substandard). The share of pvt sec 2wards global trade is below 1%, is this not enough proof of its `merit`

india has cascading inequalities.
by CHETAN SHARMA on Aug 13, 2004 02:22 PM

the writer prafull , has not takn the pains to see through the problem of socail differances in the indian society. though he has given various reasons to justify reservation in the indian governmental structure but has miserably failed to justify his point.
infact reservation is the bane for not only upper strata of society but for the lower classes also. records have shown that the fruit of reservation has not reached the needy, but has actually been reaped by already welloff members of the lower classes. then why carring on with such a system that is not solving the purpose of it's existance.
if we are serious in uplifting the socially and economically deprived classes of india we should think of means which will effectivly work, the way to solve this problem had already been shown to us by father of our nation.
1. free education should reach each and every lower class family
2.reservation of all kind should be abolished so as to free them from any kind of inferiority complex and they should feel themself's as equal.
3.making more strong labour laws, thoses which are favourable to lower strata of society.
4.providing financial subsidy at places like hospitals and school

Brahmin bashing of worst kind!
by Rajendra Shenoy on Aug 13, 2004 02:15 PM

Now that BJP is out of power comrade Bidwai has resorted Brahmin bashing while showing exemplary lack of clarity.

It is unfortunate to see so called intellectuals hold Manu, rather than the enlightened leadership of congress party which ruled India for the 40 out of 50 plus years of independence, responsible for voes of Dalits and Adivasis. Author further reveals his lack of understanding by clubbing OBCs and Muslims into the underprivileged class.

India is still a country which depends on agriculture more than anything else. Most dalits are employed in this sector. The real struggle that India witnesses today is between OBCs and Dalits. Land reforms is the answer to most of the problems that Dalits face today.India's secular elite has little interest in the grass root reform agenda as does not appeal to the chattering class.

Reservation for Muslims is a time bomb. Muslims of India were never oppressed. Backwardness among Muslims was the direct result of fact that Muslims kept themselves away from English education while their Hindu counterparts wholdheartedly. It is the lack interest, and definitely not the lack of opportunities, which created backwardness among Muslims.
