The economic union between the southern states are signs for great development and cooperation between these states. Its admirable because hypocrsiy is less than that of the hindi-speaking states, for simple facts the issues which rule the stare are, in MP its about vajpayee eating beef or not, bhojsala, umabharti a fifth standard dropout as the future leader, in UP its Mayawati her b'day celebrations, video tapes, horse trading of MLA's, in Rajasthan trishul, reservation for upper castes, Gujarat, Bihar has load of facts which takes pages to type..so nothing wrong in supporting the move by the southern govts..if it leads to political union...and if widely supported..we have to analyse why its happening rather then simply breaking it with iron hands.

Reg. 'Southern Economic Union'

I don't know why Guruswamy is so pessimistic against this union. This is surely a positive side. Tell me, how long Lallu's remarks can be funny? And, how long the Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid cases are relevant? If you see the difference between North India and South India, North politics is more a drama, whereas the South is making a progress always. See Krishna or Naidu.. they've been giving something to the state. Not to say that, there are no issues, like Cauvery which is dragged almost every other day. But, inspite of that, Chennai is regarded as 'Detroit of India' and B'lore is the real champion for technology.

What can UP/Bihar can boast of? All these days, we hear Lallu saying that infotech is dangerous to this country and such equally dirty statements. And, UP has this mandir, reservation stuff. Who knows, by this time, Mayawati might have inaugurated 1000 th idol of Ambedkar. Lallu's jokes are very stale and Mayawati's gimmicks are even more obselete.

And, see the south for once. Jayalalitha might be noisy, but the progress can't be ignored. Krishna and Naidu can literally throw their weight to lure any MNC to come to their states.

So, why crib against the union?

Mr. Mohan Guruswamy - master of EXTRApolation
by Prasad on Jun 13, 2003 06:18 PM

Dear Mr. Mohan Guruswamy,

After working for the finance ministry of India, it seems like you have mastered the art of EXTRApolation.
Don't you feel that you have gone a bit too far in this matter of relating two unrelated (Terrorism and Southern Economic Union)things? or is it that you are compelled to write certain no. of columns for Rediff, which made you write such an absurd column??

What was the need to discuss two independent issues in one article and make a mess of it ?

Local support from vested interests, mostly financial, because the terrorists were pouring money, had a major role to play in the proliferation of terrorist camps in Hilkaka. The political nexus also cannot be denied, but it is more likely based on very local considerations. The success of Operation Sarp Vinash speaks for itself. It is a plus point for the NDA government and does not warrant any major explanation from Mr. Advani.

The second half of the article is really crazy, devoid of any financial logic. Is this written by a former adviser to the Finance Minister or by some "anti-South" politician ? Mr. Guruswamy must have dished out really stupid advices to Yashwant Sinha.

What is "bad" about states interacting with the World Bank or ADB ?

Why should not the Southern States form an "economic alliance" (sic) ?

India has long since suffered from restrictive laws. It is high time that we grow strong economically within the framework of true federalism.

If is well known fact that southern states are progressing ahead. But also look at Gujarat and Maharashtra, they too are progressing.
The bottom line is other states from North and East are far behind. One can understand the problems in North-East and also the rusted/rotten communist of East.
What has happened to other states; they have not been able to make progress instead of baised New Delhi attitude towards them.
Even the government machinery has failed in Bihar. So why is Mr. Guruswamy looking at the southern alliance as a threat. Instead the government should have encouraged more inter-state co-operation.

Sub: Mr. Guruswamy's article

I liked the subject and its content. All these things are bound to happen when a party at centre will form a coaliation government with 22 or so parties. It can not give any time to the public or national security. It will exsercise full time to save its government only. For all these failures only we are responsible as we do not give clear mandate to a single party and after voting we expect miracle from the government. Only Indian government is not to blame as terrorism has spread over all the world in recent years.

Regarding Southern Economic Union, these states are doing right thing. They are not for charity for so many yeas to feed UP and Bihar governments who in the name of development have done nothing.

southern states union

I was born and bought up in chennai and after 25 years in chennai had a chance to stay in Bihar for a year. I know why people hate bihar and UP to that extent. It is sad that with all mineral resources bihar is poor state. When some states strive to get economically better why scuttle the move Guruswamy. What have those hindi speaking states done for the economocal betterment of our nation. why should i foot the bill for laloo and rabri who don't do anything. there is one way to destroy china, no weapons , no war, no nukes. just give bihar and UP to them along with laloo and mulayam yadav and their clan. u can see china attaining our sorry affair in just 5 years.

The article is a good one, and some of its points are worth considering.
the author is right about the hollowness of our "Iron Man" and our proposed "heavily-defended borders". The govt. surely has egg on its face.
On the other hand, about terrorist attacks, I think they increased because of an increased insecurity in Pak due to our nuclear tests and economic and political stability.
For the union in S. India, there are 2 ways of looking at it. While it actually is a prelude to a broader cesession from Indian Union, it also needs to be considered that by co-operation, these states can progress much more, and our BIMARU states really need to get their acts together. why shoudl the S. Indian states keep feeding the north while not getting enough in return (by the way, I am a north indian).

Economic union of Southern States
by S on Jun 13, 2003 05:27 PM

Whats wrong with few states forming a union for greater economic prosperity??? Mohan's article is filled with fallacious reasoning and illogical arguments. It was only states like Punjab,Kashmir and few north-eastern ones which want to be indepenedent, there has been no case of southern states wanting to be independent. The whole idea is ridiculous and absurd.Grow Up Mr.Mohan!!!! And think before you make such kind of irresponsible statements.
