Danger to the world
by RK Agnost on Jun 12, 2003 10:37 PM

Organized religions have give nothing but pain and misery to the world. They promise heaven to get new converts. Religions rob free though and individuality. They promote intolerance. And dont give me shit that all religions preach same. If every religion preaches same then we would have one religion.

Christianity says christ is the way to salvation. This is totally absurd. They say God is just. How can such a God deny salvation for people who were born before Christ. These guys believe in miracles. This is what I cant stand. Miracles breach laws of nature. This nonsense is not limited to Christianity but extends to other religions. The only difference is Eastern philosophies are tolerant.

I am an agnostic person. I dont say that there are no religions with rationality in them. For example Arya Samaj is very rational. Infact I appreciate the way they condemn the nonsense that is prevalent in the world. I have never seen an Arya Samaj preacher knocking on my door promising heaven. I read many books on Indian philosophy. It looks like Arya Samaj is extremely rational in its approach and do not attempt to rob freedom of thought.

Forceful conversion???
by Navs on Jun 12, 2003 03:15 PM

Does the phrase "forceful conversion" make sense? Any person with a little common sense can say that it's impossible to dictate one's thoughts. It would be ridiculous to say that even a cruel "dictator" can "forcefully" convert a person of one religion to another. Even if a person says, "Yes ... I have converted", he/she would follow his/her own ways because faith is something which nobody can control and direct. A person would convert to other faith only if he/she believes strongly and feels in heart that he/she SHOULD convert. So, all these laws to ban conversions etc etc are mere gimmicks for creating vote banks.

Thanks for rediff
by Bimal on Jun 12, 2003 06:48 AM  | Hide replies

I should say thanks for rediff for publicing this article. I knew that there are lot of ignorant people in India. This article confirmed that. This article clearly reveals that authors ignorance. Not only that, even those who have commented by supporting this articles too expressed their ignorance in different way.

I have posted 5 comments in this...nothing has been published by rediff..i do not know what rediff thinks...may be they are also in that category...

I read sombody says that this article has to be published internationally...my humble request ...better not...because this will expose our ignorance internationally...if they read the comments supporting this article then my INDIA's image will go down somewhere...

i do not know what the HINDU people thinks in their mind...ASI says there is no evidence of temple in ayodhya...but VHP says it will build it...does ur GEETA says to build temple by dismantling a mosque?...i beleive nobody can answer this question..

All the most i can say..GOD only has to save these kind of ignorant people by forgiving them and mould them in a better way...but no one can help author...

Bimal.

Learn to change
by alex21 on Jun 11, 2003 11:14 PM  | Hide replies

Here goes another fascist interpretation of the conversion issue. What Mr. Arvind forgets that it is not the Pope but people like him who are spreading hatred. Hatred for Christians. I wonder how many Christians he knows personally, to corroborate his
(borrowed blindly from Swami Vivekanand) assumption that Christians are enemy of this nation. Dear Sir, if India is to become a great modern nation it must have the courage to change some of its traditions and values. It must do some soul-searching.

I belong to the Protestant stream of Christianity and I have nothing but profound respect for the Pope. He is more sensible than many of his Catholic followers in India who cow down in face of the pressure from the fascists to ban conversions. My dear Catholic friends don't be fooled by these senseless rhetoric of the fanatics. His Holiness the Pope is absolutely right about India. It doesn't need trishuls, it needs Bibles and the Cross.

Dear Varun,
Thanks for the compliment! But you misspelt "fantastic" (I know you meant fantastic christians like alex)... jokes apart. What are you so agitated about ...

1. The problem arises when you start equating religion with love for the nation ...

2.The issue is what are the values that will make our nation great...no matter where they come from...

It doesn't need fanatic, dogmatic Christians like Alex, either. There all well established people who are professedly Christian, in Kerala and Goa. They have a healthy respect for Hindus, so there is no problem with them. It's the neo-Christians who are absolute fanatics, India can do without.

Arvind Lavakare's article on the Pope
by Jaganniwas Iyer on Jun 11, 2003 11:03 PM

I must profusely thank Shri Lavakare for yet anither masterly article. The claims of spiritual and religious superiorty by Christianity are bluntly spaeking, pure hogwash. Its record of spreading colonialism, poverty, environmental and cultural degradation, war and human misery are too lenghty to merit a lengthy discussion here. We Hindus must thank Jaya and Modi for the new anti-evangelising laws; India needs more tough laws like these and tougher enforcement. As for 'secularism', we'll, we've had enough!
