Agreed that the Indian Government is overdoing the Kalpana chawla thing, but the article is critical without being constructive. Stray examples do not validate the point. We need foreign investment and it is certainly more welcome if it is from the Indians who also have some sort of affinity. In any case what is wrong in wooing the Indians to have a relook at India. Years of mis-planning and bureacracy have taught us the uselessness of these arguments.

Passport to privilege

Dear Mr. Mitra:

There is one fallacy that keeps popping up in the press about the gulf NRIs not being treated as equal to the Western NRIs. The truth is that the Gulf NRIs cannot get citizenship of the Gulf countries. Hence the matter of dual citizenship does not arise.

Best Regards
Tilak VArma

Facts wrong!
by Rakesh Menon on Feb 18, 2003 10:09 AM

Perhaps our 'well-versed' writer fails to realize that residents from the Gulf cannot be dual citizens since they are already Indian citizens! The new facility allows for people who at one point or another gave up Indian citizenship to reclaim it. A little moderation would do good....

Who is more money minded?
by Sheetal on Feb 18, 2003 10:07 AM

Maybe its not really about money as the scribe thinks. Maybe it is about achievment, ability and courage. We, the diaspora, do not want the money of our brothers and sisters in India, but the tone of the article makes me think that people like the scribe can think of nothing else except how much money we make and why we shouldn't make more.

A very mercenary article.

Get Rid of The Fundamentalists
by Venkat on Feb 18, 2003 09:47 AM  | Hide replies

The problem is not the diaspora or lack of opportunity in the country. As long as we have fundamentalists such as the BJP, VHP etc.. and people keep supporting them, Indians can never focus on development and progress.

This is simply because Western Democracies, leaders saw reason and do not Rigidly hold on to their ideology (at least on domestic issues). America is probably the most Socialist Country in the world today, but during its years of development , there were no 'isms'. It went for Social Security, anti trust laws, environmental protection, etc. only when it could afford that being the richest nation. i may be ignorant of communism, but definitely know that you could afford to be a Left Winger in a western country, but not a Right WInger in any communist country.
