Disparity
by Rythm on Sep 25, 2016 11:41 AM

One more thing to add. The money paid to the stars. Big studios and funds signed on stars with big money. There is great disparity in money paid to stars and ticket collection. One just cannot sustain such a model. One cannot pay 30-40 crores to a star alone and expect to make a profit. Everybody wants to be the highest tax payer. But its the producer who suffers

Only way out of this, is if the star takes next to nothing while signing on a film and takes a cut in profits. But no star would agree to this, because there is another line of producers waiting to sign him on with big bucks

Ridiculous

statement.. Do we have only 3 Khans in the country to drive cinema? Fact is there are mediocre directors around, who don't know how to make a good movie. Look at Sairat, regional movie (marathi), with no stars & very small budget this film has won hearts of many.

Correct. And to boot it, Sajid Nadiadwala has got an award for film-making from some Org in France and the crowd darling Katrina has been conferred with an award in the name of one of the greatest actress of her times, Smita Patil: shame on the audience, actually

I agree with the view that the it is too costly to watch a movie in a multiplex these days.

Avg. ticket price of a top rated actor is 250/- a piece. A family of 4 will spend 1000/- on tickets alone. Then each pop corn is at least 180/- and coke is 100/- so 2 pop corn and just two coke makes it 560/- so a family spends 1560/- minimum on a movie.. So if I am to spend this amount on the movie ... i will only spend it on a complete entertainer and maybe once in 3-4 months..... I am not spending this money on a movie every month or every alternate month even.. So only those movies that have something to offer every one do well... Earlier movies with typical college romance use to attract all kinds of audience... but not now.... Honestly speaking though Udta Punjab is a fantastically made film.... but it would not have attracted that big an audience had it not been for the controversy..... The families did not go to see it... it was watched by the college or young office going or just married with no kids crowds... SO its nothing but the over all money a family spends on watching a movie is what is keeping the crowds away.....

I honestly feel that some elements of article above may not fully represent the reasons of why business is falling. The population of India is growing, middle class is growign even more and paying capacity is increasing so honestly ticket price is hardly an issue. I dont think it has anything to do with quality of movies either. Also to say that quality of movies is inferior is understanding the issue wrongly. We have always had good and bad movies every year.
Some of the key reasons what the author may have missed are:
1. Advent of social media: piracy is becoming a bigger issue. Most of the people have already seen the movie by downloading or on video channels. Someone needs to see the youtube stats
2. Its not quality but length of movies. There is a reason why cricket moved from 5 day to 1 day to half a day event. We need to do the same with our movies. Time for long movies is well past. People dont have patience.
3. People viewing habits have change. TV offers much better options, social media even better. Movie industry needs to stay relevant and attractive enough.
4. The only point on quality is that perhaps our movies to less extent and TV to a much larger extent have failed to keep the viewers engrossed and engaged. There is absolutely nothing that a teen can watch. Both TV/ movies cater to perhaps 35-40 audience a lot more - which is why even a crappy program like Big Boss is such a big hit (it\'s perhaps the only thing people can see except for Hywd channels
