This scene, immediately succeeding the one in which his character was showing remorse, is one of the greatest scenes that comes to my mind in which AB’s acting has been superlative.

I remember watching the film aired by DD at a very young age. Even the raunchy bathing scenes could not fire my imagination as did the final dialogue of the film by AB. The illicit implication of the dialogue delivered with cunningness and confidence by AB and the suddenness of the film’s ending made my imagination run wild with adult thoughts at that tender age. It was like opening up of a secret adult world in my mind.
I remember Naseeruddin Shaw sometime making a comment on Bachhan: that what an actor he was until he became a star. Saudagar was probably one of those films which came before stardom robbed him of actor. I did enjoy watching this movie long ago on television. And the memory of the film still lingers. Amitabh is perhaps one iconic actor with unmatched talent and cjharisma. And also fine sensitivity. A rare combination indeed. Ever since he became a star his talent was rarely exploited.
Though people have made Amitabh the top star due to his angry young man role and action movies, it is the real small gems like Saudagar in which Amitabh is really able to show himself as an actor. The movie was a flop due to the slow pace and may be Amitabh-Nutan chemistry was not liked, nevertheless one can see the sincerity and commitments of each and every person associated with this movie to give the audience something good to know and appreciate like the art and lives of people making jaggery as well the simple and struggling and content/happy life of village people.
