For the writer who suddenly feels all mushy and empathetic towards the affected just becos of this movie, as if if it had not been this movie no one would have been enlightened, it is better to take cue from facts and counter views (from a much respected columnist - http://www.ndtv.com/article/opinion/on-haider-boycott-bigotry-not-the-movie-602143) to this movie. But no one denies the plight of the people there. All I am saying here is the about the MOVIE. All said, not-so-good movie is a not-so-good movie. Note: I am an ardent fan of Mr.VB to such an extent I even attend his off-screen speeches out of sheer respect for his audacity. I will watch the movie again to see if it proves me wrong, after-all i am a fan of Mr.VB.......:-)
I am really perplexed to see why/how everyone goes gaga over this movie. But for sure it IS a daring ATTEMPT and never b4 onscreen. But was it really engaing. NO. Who cares whether it is Hamlet or humbug once inside the cinema hall. We need an engaging (need not be entertaining) movie bcos it is after all Mr.VB's. Except for the few scenes (helped in a big way by BGM and Irfan Khan) there was no tension,what-next feel,suspense thrown at us by the characters or the way the story unfolds. The only unexpected twist was Tabu blowing herself up.Can you feel how tension filled scene it would be?? but no it was not so on the screen just becos there was even a more unexpected twist with oldies singing and shooting playing spoilsport (critics call this dark humor with a wow) like rain numbing the crackers. Maybe something was like that in the Hamlet, again, who cares, how it is on the screen...Got it? Simply putting, the grittiness created by the snow, the dialogs, the cinematography, the countryside, the grey characters was completely tempered down by the the way it was rendered on screen. I feel that the same kind of guilt which made the Oscars to award the best film trophy to 12 Years a Slave is working here too among our critics.
Sudarshana - agree with you, perhaps the best work of Vishal, see my comments on this movie on FB. It was so difficult to convert Hamlet to a modern story and make it work. Some of the comments here remind me of the 4 blind men and an elephant ...ha ha ha
Dear Mr Vishal Bharadwaj , hope you are trying to do extraordinary in making movie, but sometimes it doesn't work, this movie Haider was so irritating i couldn't describe it, horrible movie, better make it some masala entertainment movie, every time you try to do different movie, good experimentation agree..but it won't work. you should have done this movie for 90 minutes with fast moving, then this movie had been worth watching, better luck next time with good entertainment.
