Totally disagree with you on that. Raja was & is the best. ARR is good at copying western songs & his songs don't last 6-12 months, let alone a generation!

Totally agree! Raja's songs still linger on while ARR has copied most of his 'hits'. Even this movie has some of his nifty copies. :D

I too have always wondered about how people can get carried away, and give titles like Mozart of Madras. Rahman is a great talent, no doubt. But, titles like this, are an unfair stretch, particularly during Ilayaraja's lifetime. I was in college when Rahman came out with Roja. And looking back, starting from 'chinna chinna aasai', there are not many songs that made an impact 6 months after release. But Ilayaraaja's music has a divine, medicinal quality that lingers this day, exactly as it did when I heard for the first time 30 years back. Ilayaraaja is one genius beyond words can praise, and no title will do justice!

Exactly. You said it. Rahman can do songs (with generous help of MTV, V channel etc.) and they don't last long. And calling him 'Mozart' is the cruelest thing one can do to the real geniuses like Bach, Mozart et. al..
There is nothing great (not even good) about ARR's music. Mediocrity is the norm & ARR tops that list.

The problem with IR fans is that they are unable to accept the success of ARR. IR had good time just like MSV in his haydays. If IR fans can cherish his music for 30 yrs so can ARR's fans. How many IR's numbers post ARR's entry have lasted so far? ( he has composed almost 250 films after ARR's entry). If he is the greatest ( as claimed by his fans) why is he not able to establish himself beyond the boundaries of south? Has he not copied at all? ( when it comes to IR's copying let's always use the word "inspiration")

Raja is a genuius-just note his songs/orchestration/fusion of folk,classical,carnatic,western-his bgms are legendary-his music stands time-AR is topnotch music director no doubt-but comparing him with Raja is nonsense-Raja< music is unique and balmy -almost divine-G.Muralidhar

now you know appeasement is not only in politics its in indian blood. Can Rahman' music stand by the side of MSV, KVM, IR? Touch heart and say if you have atleast the basic knowledge about music. Rahman is over exposed beyond his stature. The lyric runs hardly for two minutes (not understanable which includes slurs like Uyee, Iyee, Ishhh, etc.) but the music run for eight minutes. Pathetic to note the erosion of music and lyrics in tamil cinema and also the taste of film goers.

for your info.. I am a musician worked for IR,ARR,vidyasagar &Adityan. I have a degree in 3 instruments both in carnatic & western. I have performed in AIR as solo artist. So I dont need any certification from others regarding my music knowledge. I have never doubted the genius of IR. MSV is undoubtedly the best. But undermining ARR is wrong. Those who are writing him off have to understand his brilliance before commenting. We, the musicians, have done that.

ARR is no mozart all his international lobbying will show true colors shortly. He can't stand in front of Illayaraja
Re: Re: songs
by Govindarajan Seshadri on Feb 02, 2013 03:28 PM
he doesnt need to stand infront of Raja, as he is already on top and Raja is way below, so literally he cant now..ARR is a genius and always innovative...We have to admit tht Raja had his share of success, but ARR has replaced him completely on the charts and tht didnt go well with the IR fans...I know its hard to digest

100% agree with Anitha. These days people listen more to Mouna Ragam, Agni nakshathiram, Mudhal Mariyadhai etc. than Roja, Bombay or or Gentleman. IR's music is beyond generations and will sustain even 20 yrs down the line, but ARR is a seasonal music director and will fade away with time along with his music.
JUST LIKE RAM GOPAL VERMA , HE NOT ABLE TO GET PULSE OF TODAYS GENERATION , HIS PRIME TIME WAS FROM 1987 TO 2000..... HE PASSED HIS PRIME , NOW PLEASE ONLY PRODUCE MOVIES DO NOT DIRECT THEM ,

Just watch the technical reality of 26/11 trailer. Then talk about rgv!!!
Cause the movies trend has been changed a lot, people are looking for entertainment. I guess Mani ratnam has made a good movie about 15yrs back? He is no more fit to make any more good movies, please retire, we are tired of you Mani. In Mani ratnam movies, you can see he spends lot of Money but difficult to find Ratnams (diamonds) in his movie. I hate his movies now.

Agree. he should move with time. Dalapathi was his worst. Superstar was just blinking his eyes there with short and irritating dialogues. songs were the only saving grace. hope kadal is good! atleast the songs are ok
