This aritcle is like a draft of cool air in the daily grind of our lives...it took me back to the 80's when I was a primary school student...I rem seeing this for the first time on a VCR ( now almost extinct) at a friends place...a beutiful and warm movie, which had a wonderful connect.....Thanks Rediff for posting this article.
Sorry Suparn, you have got this incorrect.. it was this hero's father who invented this device and it was in custody of Ashok Kumar. Ashok kumar does not die at all, he gives this gadget to the hero and leaves the city..
It was 1987, when I saw the movie after clearing my B.Sc. I felt the movie was so close to my heart even today I watch that movie whenever there is a telecast. This movie has all the entertainment tools & parameters in the right proportions, that you feel like watching it time and again. Directional abilities, acting flares of all the actors and editing accumen were excellent to present it to the spectators as a complete entertainer. This movie suffices the very purpose of all the audiences that goes to theatre to watch a movie. I wish if Mr. Shekhar Kapoor could have made some more such classics ! We must pay our sincere thanks to such legends in Indian Cinema.
It was one of the very few class movies made in the worst decade for indian movies - The 80's. It was not even the most successfull movie of the year with crappiest movies making more money. If released now (for first time) it would have been a 200 Cr grosser.

80s had some very good Hindi movies - not of the masala type but for more mature audience. That was the time when Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil redefined Hindi cinema with several realistic performances. It brought in Nazrudeen Shan, Om puri and Amol Palekar. Well, there were no "heros" so to speak because Rishi, amitabh, vinod were all on their way down and no alternatives until Aamir and Salman came in sometime 1988. Sreidevi ruled the roost and Madhuri caught up fast.

The good movies of Nazrudeen Shan, Om puri and Amol Palekar that you speak of are from 70's. Golmal (1980) was Amol's last success. Manmohan Desai & Prakash Mehra made movies that were great and successfull in 70's made annoying and successfull movies in the 80's. The prime reason for the sharp decline of quality in 80's is that the middle class stopped going to theaters with advent of national television and the so called mass patronized Jeetendra's remakes / Mithun / Govinda (late 80's).

Boss, you all forgot one thing. There were no absence of heroes but after Himmatwala in 83, Sridevi emerged as a Hero who started heroine oriented filems where no hero could compete with her (outgoing or incoming). It was the era of Sridevi & only Sridevi inspite of stiff competitions from Jayaprada, Padmini Kolhapure, Rati Agnihotri & Meenakshi Seshadri. When ppl talk about Madhuri, they do not know about Sridevi era who has given more no. of hits than total no of movies by Mads. If you did not like Jeetu's movies thats bcos in every movie Sri was there & with superb roles (full of acting as well as glamour) so there was nothing to do for the hero.
Two mistakes in the article, the invisibility device was developed by Mr. India's father and was with Ashok Kumar who is a family friend. Ashok Kumar does not die in the movie, it is Mr. India's (Anil Kapoor) father who dies.
It was not a Bud Spencer Movie Super Trooper, but a Terence Hill Movie Super Snooper....

the scene where Mr India lifts an entire table of food in the restaurant, takes it out to the street to feed a family of hungry kids was well presented, with the echo in his speech etc. Mr India was truly India's spiderman. I'm so glad Amitabh didn't do this role. It was truly for AK

Yes, I am glad that AK did not do the famous manmohan desai classic amar akbar antony or Don, the original.
I was school going kid when it was released. Saw it in theater with the whole family & liked it so much. Even got an audio cassette & would listen to it all the time. Kishore-Kumar's songs were as good as ever. 25 years gone in a eye-bat... WOW

He was really great and so too Satish Kaushik. Each character was etched for the people involved including Anil Kapur.
Mr.Verma...at least study the topic u r writing about instead of bullshitting...u have no clue of the minute details of Mr.India like who made the gadget...this stuff matters for fanboy columns which u obviously have no idea of...somebody call Raja Sen to whack this guy on the head
