There was a time when Bengali cinema use to lead the pack and out perform Hindi movies in western countries. Bengali movies and artists were revered world over and even in Hindi cinema, there were many Bengali directors, singers etc. But sadly Bengali movies and artists did not get the same level of national recognition in India compared to Hindi actors and even now it's very sad to see how far the medium of Bengali cinema has declined compared to it's glory years during the Satyajit ray's era.

Completely share your feeling. Am not a Bengali either, but loved his acting in Apur Sansar. The scene in which he recites a poem to his friend is just fantabulous.
he is not only a cine artist but a great playwright,stage actor and director, you may listen his recitation particularly Tagore's SHESHER KOBITA simply excellent. see his acting in KING LEAR last word in acting our heart congratulations
