Totally agree with you... Its a masterpiece to come out of Indian cinema... Any list of Indian political movies is incomplete without Sudhir Mishra's benchmark film.
Replace Shanghai with_Ghayal in the list.Other better political thrillers are Maachis_Pratighat_Shiva_Ghatak_Pratibandh_etc.
Why you have to name it Shanghai ? Just to copy hollywood movies names such as Shaghai Nights or Shanghai ? It could have well been given an Indian name.
There has been lot of agressive_publicity-gimmicks to promote this movie starting from naming the movie as Shanghai (it is a great_insult to the movies named Shanghai Nights and Shanghai) and those who are expressing dislike towards this movie are castigated_of not having good enough_taste to watch intellectual_movies.This is invasive cultural aggression. Please donot under_estimate the viewer and over_estimate yourself.I have also watched great master piece works such as PatherPanchali,CharuLata,Gandhi,Silence_of_the_Lambs,God_Father,The_bridge_over_the_river_Kwai,Vietnam,Schindlers_list,etc,et c.etc...
This is a very noisy movie made in very dark background.Only silver_lining was acting of Abhay Deol.FarookhSheikh and EmraanHashmi were good as well.
Earlier,I liked Dibakar_s Khosla_Ka_Ghosla.But Shanghai is just a so so movie.

You mean to say movies made by Dibakar Banerjee? On the contrary, he is one of the few filmmakers along with Anuraag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj and Tigmanshu Dhulia who are keeping the art of film making alive in times of 100 crore masala thrash...

Except for Khosla film, all movies of this Director are trash and only psycho and mentally deranged people can enjoy this director's movies.

It seems you have no appetite for movies that dare to be different in their treatment of the subject they choose to explore. Its all right... But that doesnt give you the right to call names to people who can appreciate this type of film making... People who like movies like Shanghai, LSD and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye are far from being called psychos or mentally deranged. They deserve better. You had rather say, they have refined tastes and are open to creativity.

Moreover Shanghai is one of the very few movies that builds up on its characters. It doesnt fall to cliches. Everything from the direction to performances are extraordinary. Its a rare gem in modern cinema.

Samir : Its tough to pick the best. Anant Jog is known for playing creepy and sleazy characters. Here he plays a victim, and does full justice to the role as well.
Supriya Pathak and Farook Sheikh are known for playing simple and decent people. But in this film, they have played very crooked and sinister people, and have done so without using any special make up, SFX or strange mannerism.
Was nice to see some one trying to exlore the acting abilities of Emraan Hashmi.
And Abhay Deol just sleep walks through the role proving what a nice actor he is.

Hi Rajan,
Totally agree with you... Farooq Shaikh, Supriya Pathak, Anant Jog have brought out the nuances of their characters in a subtle yet strong way. I personally also liked Prasenjit Chatterjee's short yet effective portrayal of the Dr. Ahmedi. However when I was trying to drive a point home here, I had to write about the performances of the lead actors... As the people who didnt like a movie with minimal flaws like Shanghai couldnt have payed any attention to these veteran actors. For majority of the people, the actors we are talking about are just a part of supporting cast. Good to read from someone who appreciates performances regardless of the role in the film.

Yaar, why make dark movies.. how do they help anyone apart from winning the actors the critics-awards, such films never do good business, and people come out of cinema hall more depressed about life than they were before watching these movies.

Apart from Pipli Live,I also wonder why magnificent films like Gangajal & Apaharan were left out
Making movie after movie with no storylines - SRK, Akshay, Govinda and the likes. And people keep watching these movies and now they dont understand the difference between a brainless and a watchable movie. Better watch p0rn0andthat will be super-entertainment. WWFandLingerieFootballLeague are anyday better than theseMonstrosities.
