Kalki
by Saikat Das on Jun 11, 2012 03:19 PM

Pls Dibakar ji, sent kalki to any other film industry. At least Bollywood would get respite from her. Though Shanghai may be very good movie, but I will miss it just for not looking at Kalki

I have not seen this movie but..

Reading to all of your comments I remembered one joke;
"I went to see a Bengali art film after half an hour it started hammering on my head and was not able to understand anything; after a lot of gathering guts I thought to ask fellow sitting beside my seat. I ask him Dada excuse me for asking this and disturbing you but can you tell me whether you are understanding this movie or getting entertained? He replied NO; I asked then why you are watching the movie? He replied 'bcoz its art film; watching art film itself is so prestigious and be proud of';

So moral is I saw a lot of people advising others to go and watch some masala movies and posing as if they have patented the intelligence and are there ready to crack down on any challenge;
What I would say is lets not be hypocritic and choose what entertain others;

Hi Incredible India, "What I would say is lets not be hypocritic and choose what entertain others;" -- that is what you said above...which is wrong...I should not go and see something which entertain others...I should go and see what satisfy my need and my mind....Entertainment is not the SOLE PURPOSE of movie..let me clear of that.... People from Film Institute go to watch movie as Learning...so the point is it is upto person and their need....

Exactly. Entertainment means different things to different people, depends on the depth of understanding and intellect.

I am happy for incredible india though, he knows exactly where he falls!

What do you mean by MASS Mr Saxena...Please think deeper and clearer....If MASS means majority then as per you everything in this world should be done for Majority...?? In Paki Land,majority wants to kill every hindu leaving there,in CHina majority wants to demolish India...will be they supported...So the point is NOT MAJORITY BUT ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK RIGHT...And let me tell you it require Guts to admit that because you will face lot of criticism for that so called "MAJORITY"....Have anybody thought that MAJORITY of Indians will one day love and appreciate movies like 3Idiots,Kahani etc...So Majority changes as time progress and they also become culturally matured....Shanghai in the same way may be liked by many people in India and also by getting taste of these kind of off-beat movies many Majority will tomorrow appreciate tomorrow what they may not be appreciating today....By the way I can assure you that in this new generation of India, there will be many people who will LOVE THIS KIND OF Movies rather than Khichdi of Fight Seexx dance comedy=so called commercial cinema of bollywood.

Dumbed Down India
by S S on Jun 11, 2012 01:17 PM  | Hide replies

Its evident that this generation of Indian's have been sufficiently dumbed down to not understand what a classic is.

No wonder this movie or Paan Singh Tomar or probably Gangs of Wasseypur etc will not get the same reception that say a Dabbang or Rowdy Rathore got.

This is a reflection of what the society is and where it is headed.

if it so then why KAHANI is one of the big hit when it is also a good intellectual movie?
the answer is make movies which people will understand ,no point in making movie for himself(director)and for festivels.
you can convey message in good entertaining films also.

Upj...What is the Definition of Entertainment ...?? There is no such thing called Entertainment in general...It is a perception which differs person to person....So someone may get entertainment by seeing Shanghai and get bored by Rowdy Rathode....Now directors may not choose a movie to be entertaining for MASS people...He may choose a movie for a limited set of people...That is upto them....And Moreover...giving Message is not what Movie is for...there is much more than that...and that is called artitic expression..

KAHAANI is a great movie not doubt about it. But the premise and the story involved a topic that is not as gritty as Shanghai.

Therefore there was a glamour element in the story.

According what people have not liked is the depiction of reality as it has been done in Shanghai.

The director has not taken the soft path at any point and therefore it has made a lot of the watchers very uncomfortable as it was too close to comfort.

You are stpid to question janata without accepting the failures of film-makers. These movies are so frigtengly real, but movies are meant to make you feel pep and happy. So why should I burn 500 bucks to learn about something that I keep hearing and reading through media everyday? The fact is that these dmb filmakers lift stories directly from newspapers, but they cannot think beyond the papers to offer perspective or solutions. In the absence of a clear method to handle such frightening situations, movies like dabangg or wanted or bodyguard - where at least there is a mythical superman to solve the crime remains popular. Even you can guage from the fact that Prakash Jha or Maniratnam, who make movies close to reality, are more successful because their movies at least offer feel-good ending as gangajal or roja or bombay or rajneeti etc. The bottomline is people want to be happy and not sad when they come out of theatres. If sadness is fantasized - example aliens wash out the population of earth etc., it at least evokes some interest, because the filmaker had courage to think something outside the routine. At the end of the day, you have to show people what they like, but not what the filmaker likes. A filmaker gets judged by his ability to show what he likes in the way what public accepts and these directors are big failures

300 years Ago , during french revolution ppl learnt that viewing through drama, picture etc.is more impactful and understandable then simply reading about it..

But even after 300 years ,there are fools who yet to need a understanding on the same subject..this is called reinventing the wheel

Shanghai is a brilliant film
by arnab bhattacharya on Jun 11, 2012 12:42 PM  | Hide replies

Shanghai is brilliant film..It is subtle layered intelligent.. probably it is too subtle for regular Indian cine-goers but then seriously it is a worthy adaptation of "Z". The detailing were superb and so was the steady character build up.. It is not the regular film and even in the climax there is no over dramatization when the villain is revealed as Abhay Deol (IAS officer) plays politics himself with farooq sheik..overall the concept of Bharatnagar to be turned into Shanghai (or london) is the publicity gimmick played by political party with industrialist which is brilliantly shown.Sadly quality cinema doesn't work in Indian scenario kya kiya jaye :(

Basically it was a movie on slums of kolkata.Naming it Shanghai was totally irrelevant and publicity gimmick.

The movie was very noisy.Shooting was done in so dark environment that at times difficult to figure out where are the actors.

I was irritated with the antics_of_Kalki.Simply,her acting was over_acting like how the movie is over_intellectual.

A simple political plot,tried to be projected in a smarter_way ! But mostly,it was getting over_smart.

I liked Kahaani much much more than this movie.

Abhay acted really well.But all acting got overshadowed by constantly nagging_back ground_noise.

It was a noisy movie which gave me a headache.

There was no connection of my heart with this movie.Normally,our heart connects with a master_piece movie,this was like a barren_desert.

You are spot on Om Ghanti Om. This movie is actually based on the slums of Kolkata, of which you and your family is an integral part.

You obviously have issues against Bengalis. For your kind information, even Kahani (a brilliant movie) was also directed by a Bengali.

A better movie on similar plot : Swades_.In old days ,it was Namak_Haram (Rajesh_Khanna/Amitabh)

Amitabh has done lot of such anti_establishment movies in the 70s.
