In todays world, even the doctors are corrupt. They will consult for some time and charge exhorbitant fees.

Doctors and lawyers are more or less the same breed. We avoid lawyers cos we can live without them, but how to avoid a doctor?????

its not about the show or who is hosting - the most important is the issues of corruption and it is right that it exist in maximum level in this profession - people are becoming just to get millionaire very fast just sucking the blood of the poor needy people. in this field all are corrupt from the top to the bottom. visit any of the hospital personally and you will experience the truth by your self.

Is society treating drs better
by biren maur on Jun 06, 2012 01:02 PM  | Hide replies

Being married to a doctor, i have seen this professional from neutral prespective. Referral comissions are norm, gov doctors work in punishing condition speacially in metros. Patients are also impressed by the car doctor drives, the locality he lives etc. Doctors get no concessions from society as they have to stand in line to get their childerns admitted to school not mention exhorbitant fees. Where will all this come from? Is society treating doctors better? They also have family to sustain. A super specialist dr takes more then 12 year, scarifying a lot in the process. The private medical colleges less said better

Society may not be treating anyone better. Docs may have to stand in que to get their Children admitted in schools (so do all the other parents). A Super Specialist may take 12 years or more and spend a few crores to get himself educated. ALl that is fine. But, do all these "problems" justify taking commissions, getting unnecessary tests done, prescribing medicines based on commissions to be got from Pharmas, etc?

Sure Docs work in abysmal conditions (if they work at all) in rural areas. But, does that cover up for all the ills of the fraternity? May be all docs are not involved in malpractices. But, surely a large percentage of them are. Had the IMA or IMC acted and taken action against a few, things would have been better and perception of people would have changed.

BTW, the Docs are Docs by choice. Surely no one pushed them to come into the profession.

so? are only doctors working in gruelling conitions? no other profession does? what about truck drivers...we should let them jump line for school admission as well! what makes a doctor special? its a profession, a noble one at that, keep it noble. Doctors, even when they do not indulge in all these malpractices, will earn well above the average salary a graduate or PG of a different discpline does. What is the threshold...10 lakhs per month? all these explainations dont give the doctors a right to be corrupt.

Doctor is not above all, why he should get special treatment? Don't try escape excuses.Doctor profession is for helping others. If this was not clear then why become a doctor. Like said on Aamir's show people who become doctors are smart and if money is their prime motive then they could have chosen other professions which does not risk life of innocents.

very significant points raised
by soumik chowdhury on Jun 06, 2012 01:00 PM  | Hide replies

Thanks Dr Sanjay Nagral for taking sides. The nexus between physicians and private enterprises has reached to such height that without a mediclaim, one can't think of affording a treatment at private hospitals. Govt. hospitals, for the same reason, are the most neglected places and in inhuman conditions. The way you have raised your voice is truly praiseworthy. I am sure young doctors, who just graduate, are forced to do malpractices to raise the money they have spent as fees to private medical colleges.

Just a small correction, even with Mediclaim, it is not possible to get good treatment. Cashless system is stopped and a lot of new conditions are imposed. It could take almost 2 to 3 months to get reimbursement from Insurance ans that too the reimbursement would not be 100%. Just as an example, the Insurance would pay only 1% of sum assured as Room Rent. If the Patient pays a higher room rent, the reimbursement would be reduced by the same % from all other eligible reimbursements, including the necessary tests. This even if room rent is not claimed from the Insurance.

The IMA reaction???
by jayshankar menon on Jun 06, 2012 12:30 PM  | Hide replies

What should be done by IMA is not threaten to "Boycott" Aamir[whatever they mean by that] but try to address the issues raised. Everyone knows that whatever has been said is true and the cost of healthcare is rapidly rising in India, with an unfortunate drop in the quality. Strange reaction and I really wonder what the IMA is set up for - to do good to their members & society or to protect their members irrespective of their wrongdoings???
