for a movie like Sholay where each and every dialogues had equal weightage to carry the movie.
But when we talk abt story..its not original.. It was copied from a Japanese movie from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954)..which was remade in 15 languages in 15 different countries. And, surprise factor is, every country it was blockbuster in box office run.. In hollywood, its name was The Magnificant 7... and Indian version named was Sholay.. It's world's top 10 best movies in list, and the most influential movie ever made.

Kurosawa is regarded as the best director ever in film history. His "Rashomon" is an experiment in telling the same story through different eyes, one of his best movies ever. Yes, Sholay is more or less a direct copy of the Seven Samurai (which has been copied by Hollywood too and recently by a Japanese director too). Still, Sholay is fun and intense because it draws from the best of the best.
i remember ppl even listening to sholay' dialogues on casette players. i dont recollect any oither such movie dialogues sold in casettes! each n every dialogue was famous.
I just love these behind the scenes memories of movies. I wish rediff generates a separate section for cinema. You could include art and commercial movies both. It would be a blog on the lines of passionforcinema. Plus rediff already has a big reader base.

During 80's it was very common sir. I guess you were not born then. I myself has listened many movies, Coolie, Naseeb, Amar Akbar Anthony, Jaal, Sansaar etc. on cassette.
Why MR Salim Khan keeps on reminding us his fond memories during his "blockbuster writing"(read struggling) days? He did the same sometime back in a talk show on ETC channel. Once a genius always a genius. The duo of Salim Javed have failed miserably in coming up something spectacular trying to appease the current "dude" and "whatever' generation of 2010. Without any doubt, the duo gave respectability to the writing department which was marginalised during those times. "Sholay' was admittedly a giant of an entertainer but not without flaws. It was "NOT" the greatest story ever told. R D Burman composed tepid music (except his own mehbooba....).The Jaya Bachan portion was boring and the climax unconvincing. But The movie had a dream run at the BO which changed the fortunes of nearly all the performers.BE it Sambha, Surma bhopali and Asrani as a psedu British Jailor.

Jealousy is a sad thing and even sadder when you have to voice it, what you don't like don't watch but don't put other peoples work down. Mr. Khan has done more in his life time then you seem to only be able to dream of.

sholay was stupendous. when janbaaz was released by feroz khan, he boasted that it had good scenes from horses n these n that ... but the movie made 30 years prior to that, had astonishing act, action, n scenes shot marvellously that also with those old technologies.
a above normal film .. that is all find in Sholay.. recently saw again and found nothing great in it... weak script... not much situations in the film...

Kid, dont even think of any comparable parameters keeping Sholay in onside, if ever you are doing it, dont publish like this, 99.99% people will call you a Kid!
Amitabh thanked Dharamendra on an award show for recommending him to play Jai's role and it was not Salim as mentioned in the article. I think the person who wrote the article just made this up.

However Dharmendra refused that he made any recommendation for Amitabh for sholay.
