Rashmi Rao
Poor Raja has lost his bats
by Rashmi Rao on Feb 21, 2012 07:23 AM

Poor Raja Sen is such a wannabe that he wants to fit in with the so called "new young" generation, when he knows he is way beyond old. Poor guy fails to notice the subtle details which lead to the movies getting oscars..
True, Movies like Chicago didnt exactly deserve an Oscar, but they werent bad films. Million Dollar Baby and Titanic most certainly did deserve to win... Raja failed to grasp the message that movies like Million Dollar Baby wanted to convey.. ie it is never too late to pursue your passion. These kinds of films which fill you up with inspiration are what make these films oscar-worthy. Raja simply cannot register these points in his shriveled brain.

Of course, why did Raja not mention the simply ghastly movie Slumdog Millionaire? This movie was totally pathetic and had nothing in it for it to even deserve a nomination.
Instead of venting his ire on deserving movies, let him analyse carefully before making a silly list like this.

Misdirected ..
by Deepanjan Datta on Feb 20, 2012 02:06 AM  | Hide replies

Here's the deal. While your list indeed points out some of the blindingly obvious omissions, the rant against the eventual winners is misdirected. The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fight Club, Goodfellas and Brokeback Mountain deserved to be winners in their own right. No debate. That being said: Crash, A Beautiful mind, Million Dollar Baby and American Beauty weren't undeserving by any stretch, and certainly not in the nominees list which admittedly had glaring omissions. It's not their fault that perhaps their best competition was omitted. Among the ones competing they were the best. Ditto about Titanic. It definitely played to the gallery, but was there a better Oscar-worthy film that year. Also, Academy awards, like any major award function are all about mainstream. And if Shakespeare in Love was kitschy, what about Slumdog Millionaire? Wasn't that essentially an 80s bollywood caper glorifying '3rd world India' package? Don't misdirect your vent. Even I'd be anguished about a movie like Eternal Sunshine .. or Brokeback missing out. They were great movies, but I can't grudge the eventual victors in the actual pool. Besides, what about a year like 1994, when Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Philadelphia and Forrest Gump all were upon us together? Giving any one an Oscar would feel like injustice to other, does that mean we'd cry foul if our personal favorite doesn't win?

Hail Deepanjan, you have posted one of the most intelligent and crisp views/comments on this forum. I bet you have a strong potential of being a movie critic (if you are not one). I bet you will be far more successfull then these morons writing in media like Web/Newspaper.
You made my day, you rock Mr. Datta. Hope to see your comments more often..
Thanks

What about Braveheart and Gladiator? Scott's Bladerunner was a far better movie.
