Prior to this 'Sethu' was the movie which laid platform for several good movies and directors. Similarly this time Selva has set a stage in Tamil!??? rather Indian cine industry. Nobody would have imagined a story like this before entering theatres... GREAT WORK BY SELVARAGHAVAN...
Have waited for decades for a movie like this and am sure that I'll have to wait for another decade for a movie that excels this, unless there is a sequel to Aayirathil Oruvan, that is.
The Movie is GRAND in all aspects. Most haunting and heart touching movie we would get to see in a Lifetime.
Our gratitude to Selvaraghavan for taking Tamil Cinema to a level that no one has ever dared to. Well done for G V Prakash for such thrilling and haunting music.
Excellent performance by Karthi, can't help but clap our hands and laugh out loud in all his scenes before intermission and awe at his performance after it. Praying to God that he gets many more directors like Ameer & Selva to show what he's got.
Reema and Andrea are wonderful and far removed from the normal female actors.
Parthiban has proved that he is great.
I have always been a great fan of Partiban despite many frowning at the idea, now he's made me Proud.
Love the movie. Am going to watch it atleast another coupla times in Theatre.

Let me start by saying - I do have an interest in history, and I do understand Tamil. The first half of the movie is very good. A lot of grandeur, daring, dark (although the scene with the tribe reminded me of King Kong) and well shot scenes (not a copy of Mackennas Gold, but definitely inspired), with some light moments. The dialogues were good, the performances were fantastic and I was really licking my chops for the second half! And boy, was I dissapointed.
It looks like the first half is an adventure movie, and the second hald is an ala apocalypto. To confuse themes this way does not seem right. A Chola kingdom that had reached such heights of culture, art and architecture (Big temple was built in the 11th century) all of a sudden forgets how to live and go back to 1000BC. No real reason for ppl to stay in such suffering, especially when there is no one stopping them from just moving! The fight sequence in the end was pathetic! And why are the people in this movie blacker than the negros of Africa? 3/4 coats of black paint shows what? Too many scenes in the second that dont add anything to the movie Eg: Why do I care if Reema stands and pees or not!!!! What does it show?
Again - As a story line.. it is awesome. If someone just narrated it to you, it would sound great. The first half is excellent. The second hald is screwed up. Will give the director a pat for attempt, but no more.

Perfect logic, it would be great if the director himself can start a blog or something and answer all these questions, may be we can see if he has any logic in his kitty to prove his worth!!!!
Selvva Raghavan has done the magic again. The movie is good and esp if you know Tamil ( I mean Tamil history and have read old Tamil poems), you can enjoy more. Script is very good and daring concept tried in Tamil. If it is in Hindi, Am sure it would have been super duper hit ( after all Jodha Akbar - the crappiest movie was a hit ). If you are a Tamil and want to get good standard movies - go and watch this movie in theatre. Kudos to Selvva Raghavan direction, Parthiban acting, Kaarthi and Reema acting.
Now the negatives. Second Half Editing is bad - feel lengthy, Music is average, Some special effects are noticeable (means bad), some illogics (like Chola King dancing in selvaraghavan style dance, Reema Sen wearing warrior suit when fighing along with army). Climax looks like done in haste.
Yes i agree pandiyan Mayathevar. Film is very good. But some PPL likes only 4 songs & 4 fights... :( " Those who likes fight & songs only please dont see this movie" these PPL likes only vatikaran :( very bad.....
Thanks to rediff for giving good review .... It is one of brave attempt .. I can see hard work in each frame ... What a imagination and what a way he brought the screen play ... First half if very good ... and second half is amazing ... might be stunt is not good .. but with in 32 crore's this is achieved ... Selva have brought WAR Crime of Lankan army on the screen .. Over all Movie is very good ... i would like to watch it again ... Finally , I would ask Shankar [Direcor] to watch this movie on how to take a movie with in burdget with out spending more money on glamour and stupid romance songs ... Thanks selva for taking us to a historical journey ...
First Half is excellent. Second Half is ok. It is very difficult to understand, specifically olden Tamil words & dialogues. Plus point is 1st half,Karthi & parthiban's acting, Remasen Anderea, Settings & Dressings in second half(chola period). Minus POint is climax, there is no finishing. But every Tamil people should watch is movie. very rarely we found this type of movie. FelixDavid
