It is an Idiotic statment to comapre this movie with Sholay. 30 years back what is the population of india and what is the number of students and engineering colleges and how many theatres. Today so many theaters and so many Idiot students waste their parents money to watch this movie more and more which is helping the producer to make more money. I am sure Madhavan will be the same and Aamir will be the same and they cant do any miracle because this movie succeeded. Let them take a challenge of One man Army Amithab who carried Auro and Black single handedly.

What was the entetainment options available then ? Was there TV with 100 channels? Was there DVD? Yes, times are diferent, but pluses and minuses balance out.
Chetan bhagat has apologised,he has forgiven Hirani and the team for what they had done(denying the due credithe deserved).It is his greatness.Hats of 2 Chetan.He has emerged as Chetan the great.

Defeating others doesnt make us great when we ourself create issues for trivial things like language,state,religion (even to an extent of sub-sub-sub... caste!!). Try to look at positive things which "drunken monk" has written rather than "searching" for mistakes
It's amusing to read about Madhavan's claim about 3 Idiots breaking Sholay's monetary collections record.Not just him, you read this in so many interviews and news reports. Needless to say the ticket prices of 1975 and 2009 don't even merit comparison to make an effort to check the veracity of this claim. But Sholay's real sucess lies in it being a cult film in terms of dialogues, characters, location and above all repeat value after 30-35 years. At any given time, according to an INDIA TODAY article a few years back, there are 50-75 prints of Sholay running 90-100% full shows all over the country. Not just one morning show in 1 theater like DDLJ did at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai and claimed to be the next Sholay. The same was said about Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai etc. 8 years down, how many remember Lagaan in terms of the Sholay paramters? 35 years from now, who will remember the minutest details of 3 Idiots? SHOLAY was a once in a life time cinematic event, a colossal movie that should be just left alone to be a classic. Movies will come and go. Nothing ever will come close to a masterpiece like SHOLAY.

Very well written Praveen...3 Idiots may break Sholay's record in monetary terms..but down the lane, as u said very few will remember 3 idiots but Gabbar Singh, Jai, Veeru ,Thakur and for that matter every character of Sholay have become part of our culture..

Well said Praveen!! First of all, even the monetary comparison between Sholay & "idiots" does not have any logical weight. And as mentioned by other friends, the cult of Sholay still lives upto its glorious past. The dialogues, characters, the songs; all are iconic till date. I do not see any movie that has claimed to uproot the classic, deserve any comparison. by Alchemist

But still, I would like to correct that R Madhavan is not a tamil,he is a keralite.He is from Jamshedpur.He studied in DBMS school or Dakshin Bharatiya Mahila Samajam School.I have been to his Jamshedpur House,way back in 1995 when I stayed in Jamshedpur.His mother is Mrs Lathika Das,she was principal of DBMS School,I went to meet her for an interview.Madhavan and film director Imitiaz Ali were buddies from the same school and started career together that time,around 1995.Madhavan started with acting and Imtiaz started with assisting in tv serials.Now both of them have become famous,all the best to them for bright futures.
