Excessive media
by zzzzz zzzzz on May 08, 2009 08:23 AM

This is what happens when you have media in excess (non stop chatter on the web, 24 hour news channels etc. etc.). Even when there is no news, they have to manufacture something -- mediocrity and cheap, substandard reporting become the norm.

If Mammotty has no problems, why should the rest of the world?

Just coz Mammooty is a superstar or a Muslim does not qualify him for special attention in a country which does not even know that there is a language by the name of Malayalam. Please stop politicizing everything about America, they are doing what they can and they will screw up. Are we perfect!?

How did you know this?
by Guest on May 08, 2009 05:46 AM  | Hide replies

"When the immigration official saw the last name Ismail, he sent the actor to a separate room for questioning. "

Did the customs officer report this to Rediff...or just Rediff is making a logical guess...If so don't report it as a fact.

Also When the Firstname starts with Muhammad why would anyone comment that only the last name was used to determine the Islam connection....Pretty Stupid and Poor journalism.

It is not stupid. The first name being a common name no filtering is done for it. But the name 'Ismail' combined with 'Mohammed' is considered differently.

You may not know, but most people know that is the way these 'filters' work.

Why nit-pick a logical conclusion, when you yourself are ignorant of how it works?

You are real rude brat. The same thing can be conveyed in proper manner. You feel you know everything about filtering? So tell us all kinds of sorting and filtering techniques or else be milder in your views.

It is well known that real terrorists never have real passports, they only use fake ones. Somehow, this whole, using-name-to-identify-terrorists seems really silly!

Rediff is making it big deal.. nothing wrong in stopping him
by onlineReader on May 08, 2009 05:25 AM

No doubt he is well respected actor. But for US is none other than a passenger which could match the profile of the names there are after.

If any big actor from other country is stopped.. you and me don't care. We do care now because we know him well through his movies.

Mammooty anti Hindu
by Ladoo sab on May 08, 2009 05:21 AM  | Hide replies

Last year in a DYFI function in Madras he uttered 'If DYFI was strong in Gujrath there will be any riot there' !!!

Such a broad minded man should be checked thoroughly before allowing to enter in US.

As an actor Mammotty is spoiling the chances of many talented young malayalam artists. I wonder how this grandpa old man still act romance with teenage girls and how Malayalis tolerate to watch it.

Mammootys arrogant behavior came in public when he beat a gentleman in public when that guy tried to reach him.

Ladoo sab - you sound quite ant Muslim..First sort out your issues before accusing others. If Mammoottty had paid the price of flight and airport tax, he need to be treated like any other passenger. This is a clear case of ethnic and religious profiling and in US, this is considered a serious issue.

I don't know whether he said it about DYFI and I am not a sympathiser of DYFI. But there is some truth in what he said.

DYFI might have been a right foil for the crude sangh outfits that tarnished Gujarat's fairname. One doesn't know.

India vs USA officials
by lolan on May 08, 2009 04:19 AM

What is the big deal in it? USA did not invite Mammootty to visit their country. He went there for his need and hence he have to abide the rules of that country. If JFK officials want to do a profiling before entering their country, what's wrong in it. Compare this with an incident happened in Trivandrum airport, Kerala recently. A man heavily drunk arrived at the airport without proper documents. He also behaved badly with fellow-passengers and even beat an officer on duty. However, that fellow was home minister's son's friend and he was released within hours. Fortunately, that became a news. He was not even a celebrity like Mammootty.

Can you think of a similar incident in USA? Well! that's the difference. I am not arguing that USA is great and India is bad. All it says, is that in USA, law is respected and everyone abides (at least tries to follow) it. They don't care about whether you are ministers son's friend or minister. Security guys have strict guidelines and they follow it. They know that a small laxity on their part might end up in big loses. Had the navy/coast guard guys in India shown such shrewdness, we might not have lost 200 lives at Mumbai.

Only exception must be when some one goes on a diplomatic mission with a diplomatic passport. They are representing the country and hence the case of profiling George Fernandes/MMS when they go for a diplomatic mission is an insult to the country.

Mammootty is a lawyer by profession and he knows the value of law !

Probably short for Mohammad-kutty. Given his first name is indeed Mohammad this is plausible.
