ARR
by mnathan on Mar 06, 2009 11:08 PM  | Hide replies

I met ARR at his house when he was recording songs for the movie Duet. Mr. Annanthu (Who is no more) was a good friend of mine and he took me to watch the recording. I had a chance to spend few hours with ARR watching him work and chatting with him during the breaks. He was very humble and was more interested for me to talk about my work than talking about himself. He played some of his recent recordings and asked my opinion. I had a great time and spent until 11PM at his house along with Mr. K. Balachander (producer of Duet) and Mr. Vairamuthu discussing Tamil movies and songs.

I feel insulted by this film
by Lucky B on Mar 06, 2009 10:54 PM  | Hide replies

This film hurt my religious sentiments:
- One instance the Hindu mob says: "They are Muslims. Let us hit them," and the hapless Muslims cry as they flee in terror: "The Hindus are coming! The Hindus are coming."
-On the TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Jamal is asked a question by the TV host: "What weapons does Lord Rama bear in his hands?" Our Muslim hero answers: "If there was no Rama, my mother would have been alive."

I feel insulted and humiliated in this film. Does anybody care about my sentiments since I am Hindu?

Incidentally, this statement was the only played aloud by pakistani media.
If you cannot accept incidents as they happened, you have hardly matured as a democracy. Does anybody make a big deal about all the three oscar winners from India this year. All of them are from religious minorities. Gulzar is a sikh. Rahman and Resul are muslims.
This is normal stuff in India. The events sensationalized in the movie are not. That's why they make it to the movies.

Oscar is not for Hindi Films
by Vinu Mon on Mar 06, 2009 08:56 PM  | Hide replies

First of all everybody should understand that Oscar is not the award for Hindi Film. It is the award for English film. Rahman got this award for this music in an english film.
If everybody understand this there will not be any problem.
Try to make our film fare awards as famous as oscar.

Film fare awards are not giving a best actor award for an actor in English film.

Oscar is not the award for the best in world, but best in English film. Only they have one category for other languages - Best Foreign Film. But that award is just for a name sake, to make it a global award.

So, do u mean only Hindi films represent India? What about Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali and other language films? English is the world language, accept it or defy the truth. In this small world, English is the ultimate language and USA is the mother of nations, even with a trillion dollar debt to China. Hindi is Passe, Filmfare is history. Make way for the others !

you got it WRONG. Movie is made by British people BUT ACTORS & ACTRESS WHERE ALL INDIAN. If Indian director had made this movie from the book, he would've made a trasy movie like Mire Nair makes, making movies in Bombay with prostitues, or Kama Sutra. Please there are nice things to show about India and if one has to show the back ground of Slumdog boy, to make a movie than ONLY Danny boyle can show it beautifully. Where were you people when Mira Nair made DIRTY MOVIES "KAMA SUTRA OR SALAM BOMBAY." PLEASE LEARN HOW TO MAKE MOVIES FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOWS HOW TO SHOW SLUM IN A NICE WAY. IF YOU DIDN'T GET OFFENDED WITH MIRA NAIR MOVIES THAN WHY NOW. BECAUSE CREW WAS BRITISH EXCEPT ACTORS.

Ben Kingsley acted as GANDHI) Indian Govt. didn't give him permission to shoot in Raspati Bhavan. Movie was a FLOP in India BUT HIT overseas. DO KNOW INDIAN GOVT. GAVE SIR. RICHARD ATTENBROUGH "PADAM BHUSAN"

When a director gets the story to make a movie. It's his responsibility whom he hires to work with him and ABOVE ALL, EVERY DIRECTOR WILL MAKE MOVIE DIFFERENTLY. IF IT WAS MIRA NAIR SHE WILL MAKE IT LIKE "KAMA SUTRA OR SALAM BOMBAY" & INDIANS WILL NOT SAY ANYTHING. IT TAKES DIRECTOR LIKE DANNY BOYLE TO MAKE MOVIE SO BRILLIANTLY. HE USED SLUM KIDS WHO NEVER ACTED, MADE THEM ACT SO BEAUTIFULLY, KIDS ACTED IN THE MOVIE LOT MORE LONGER THAN FRIEDA OR DEV. ONLY A DIRECTOR LIKE DANNY CAN DO THIS.

A.R.Rahman and Oscars
by Radhakrishnan Nair on Mar 06, 2009 08:40 PM  | Hide replies

There is no question about the talents of Rahman. I enjoy every piece of music he puts forth. But to my surprise he cut a very poor image on the Oscar stage. The speech delivered was very poor without any substance in it. This was a great stage for him to project Indian music. On both occasions on the stage he cut a sorry figure fumbling for words not knowing what to say. There is no excuse for this since every one knew that he is going to be on stage and he should have crafted out a well rehearsed speech. Very disappointing !!

2 Levels
by senthil kumar on Mar 06, 2009 07:00 PM  | Hide replies

ARR's music has created the magic in some and some feel he is not worth. Well, I feel there are 2 levels in his music.

One, he is able to elevate some to his music excellency and another where he is not able to elevate them to his level. For those who have enjoyed his music have to wait for others to understand and not curse or spread hatred for their ignorance. Lets wait for give time for others to raise to the level dont curse them before they take the first step towards that.

I sincerely believe that the 2 Oscars Rahman received are a combined result of substantial and insurmountable ignorance of foreign audience about our Indian music and the cohesion it seemed to have brought about in the overall impression the movie created about India`s overpowering poverty. Coming from South as he does, he has leaning favouring quicker rhythm in his music. He will never be able to come close to people like OP Nayyar, Madan Mohan etc. who brought the very essence of the majestic, melodious Raga-based tunes into film music. I do not grudge him his fortuitous success as Oscar is a hugely saleable label. But, if you ever watch Rahman playing in the open ground on his electronic synthesizer our Rashtra Geet - Jana Gana Mana .. especially the words Jaya he, Jaya he, Jaya he, when he pretended as if he was producing a long "alaap" on that instrument giving it everything he had, you would immediately spot the phoney in him.

Having seen your other posts on Rediff, I can say that you are someone who thinks without hatred in your mind towards anybody. I do agree with your thought on most topics but here I beg to differ.
Oscar was not a celebration of Indian music nor is it a certification that ARR is the best in the world. Whosoever thinks so is fooling himself. It was just the best one among all the movies released last year. This music sounded fresh to the westerners and they lapped it up. Also the competition this year wasnt as fierce as usual. Had SDM been fighting against some wonderful score, it wouldnt have won. It might not be right to compare him with the legends of the previous generation. It is not that he is not capable of doing such scores, but such scores would hardly sell when it competes with Himesh and Pritam. It is a mixture of hard work and luck that he won the Oscars. Hard work gave him the recognition so that Danny Boyle works with him. That the quality of musical scores this year was his luck.
