I followed rediff review and spent $20 on ajab prem ki bcoz rediff gave it a 4 rating...waste of 2.5 hrs of my life...the same reviewer now is an itelligent judge of movies and he gives an actually good film a review of 2...rediff get some consistency

3 idiot is a super hit, but it is not a 'well crafted movie'. Amar,Akbar,Anthony or Suhaag or Disco Dancer were also super hits, but can you call them 'well crafted movies'? Raja Sen is a 'film critic'.He gets paid for 'criticizing' films on parameters of 'film craft'.His review of 3 idiotd is not disrespectful.He does not say the film will not be a HIT. He says the people will like it, which I am sure, he did too as a desi. But as a film critic, he wrote a honest review. Hit films and good movies, may not be the same movie. Case in point: this years best movie-Rocket Singh may just scamper home, to recover its costs.But it is a great movie. Its Ranbir's best movie, but his Prem became a massive hit, which as film, was not a better crafted movie. Always remember, Dada Khonke's movie: Tu Jhuk mai lu...it grossed crores,was a super hit.Was that even a movie? I am sure people would be braying for Raja's head if he had written Dada Khonfe's film off, which he surely would have written off.But it was a super hit!!

He stamped Slumdog Millionaire as a masterpiece. Keeping the masterpieces of world and Indian cinema in mind, can SM be called a masterpiece ?My question may be not relevant to the current topic, but then again there is another reviewer in rediff (Mr.Syed Firdaus) who once wrote less than a line in his movie review (Dont see it...thats it). In general, the quality is unacceptable, the reviewers get paid for that.

I think Sudhir's point is well made. The question is whether we need to equate HIT film with a well crafted movie. In a sense, Raja's review of SM is vindicated by Oscars. It is a matter of personal opinion that you can damn Oscars. But with that, so many opinions of people (who forms Oscar voters) are damned and that opinion includes Satyajit Ray as well. Probably Raja Sen is slightly better than condemnable. Again, all these are my personal opinion:-)

Movie is O.K. Gets repetitive in the end. But good according to Indian standards. Hope he does better job next time to get Indian movies to international standard.Different people have different perceptions of success. Even talented people need to put in hard work in todays world. To show that you can succeed only on the basis of talent with no hard work is a bit far fetched.

Nonsense.... Now the international audience is getting used to the Indian movie culture. Ask them to make movies like how India does.
3 Idiots doesnt get repetitive at any point. The message of the movie was "do what you like, not what your parents or relatives like". And for the parents, they should let the child decide what he wants and encourage him to follow that path.

Raja Sen has higher standards. Thats why he is called an idiot in India. He has to adjust his review according to Indian standards. He has to lower the bar. This country has a different culture. Well, he has right to voice his opinion but as a film critic based in India may be he should make some adjustments.
