Preity, a lot of goodies are in store for u. Congratulations on this. Again I agree with folks here that we should not be craving for Hollywood visibility. I do not care, if somebody ELSE recognizes or not, we make several great movies like Hollywood.

true... especially films like chak de india, swades, aankhen (amitabh bachchan one), kuch kuch hota hai, dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge, and many others do even extend hollywood standards... may bollywood become mature and start producing more films like the above mentioned instead of the regular dramatic love stories...

KKHH, DDLJ extend hollywood standards???
why do you make yourself look ridiculous...
we need not crave 2 enter hollywood...
but need 2 except that bollywood needs a lot of improvement in terms of technique & creativity....
most of them lack IQ to think beyong love stories & joint families...

Its because of audience. Unique subject movies always flop in the box office. End of the day, it should make money and entertain a broader sect of audience. Indians do not lack creativity, but filmmakers are waiting for the audience to mature in order to accept movies of other jonours

What the hell has Chak De India.
As far as I understand, It portrays something impossible happening (at director's whims), but it does not show any strategies how the team were able to win.
It's just a stupid film.

International awards
by Cynic on Oct 27, 2008 10:10 PM  | Hide replies

Mother India was rejected by Oscar bcoz it did not suit american sensibilities. Those westerners felt why a woman should not sleep with anyone for food or money. It was told by none other than Sunil Dutt on TV.

We feel proud whenever a Grammy or Oscar or similar award is conferred (or even considered) on an Indian personality.

It is still hard for us to accept that we do not need Their (with a capital T) to show what we are worth. We must come out of this slave mentality.

Well, I do agree to your point, But our industry is still after the love and romance and sentiments. It should depict our vision and mission towards the upliftment of human race. Then we say, Its our brand..

Well said. I agree with you completely. We don't need a stamp of Oscar for our movies to be called best movies. There are many movies which we can't digest and get Oscar because it suits western standards and mentality. Taare Zameen Par or Lagaan or Black or Eklavya were excellent movies and will maintain a special place in the history of Indian cinema forever even if they wouldn't have gotten any awards including Oscar. It is the people who make films work and people who judge the quality of films and not the awards. Jatin-Lalit never got any Bollywood award for Best Music despite the hits they gave in their time. If you look it up their movies, you would be shocked that how come they didn't get any award. But still they will stay in history of Indian Film Music forever. We need to come out of this slave mentality really. From an Indian living in US.

I completely agree with you on Jatin-Lalit. The same way they treated Sonu Nigam. In my opinion, Munnna-Bhai (both of them) are on top somewhere. They had everything. Similarly one of my all time favorites is Suryavansham. On the other hand, I cannot take away Hollywoood's creativity. A very simple thought but they stretch it to 2 hours beautifully.

while patriotism is good...its not appropriate to eulogize mediocrity...
If u had said AR Rahman I would have agreed...JL is very avg....
& if Lagaan was a good one & it duly got nomination...I'm sure U haven't seen Amelie & No Man's Land...

Rest 2 u have mentioned were pathetically pretentious..

Mr. Das you make sense by saying its not appropriate to eulogize mediocrity...
However I strongly disagree when you call a movie like Black or TZP highly pretentious...
If they are pretentious, what merit does a Lord of the Rings has to get the Best Movie Award (Be it not in foreign Movie)
As far as JL Vs. Rehman is conidered, both have been exceptionally good in their own perspectives and it unfair to compare them on any metrics...

LOTR was one of the most brilliant sequels..but if you say a world class bollywood movie in recent times, I would go with "A Wednesday".. slick and well made and awesome performances by Anupam Kher and Naseruddin Shah..

Hi ZA,
I was not referrin 2 TZP...
Eklavya was definitely pretentious...& Black had plagiarism claims...though I havn't seen miracle worker ...there is no smoke without fire...

As far as TZP is concerned...it needed more depth 2 succeed on international level...it began well & then ended up playing 2 popular sentiments...the kid suddenly become a genius which is not realistic...

Just a comment on TZP...Dont think the movie shows Ishaan as a genius...His learning disability is still there when the movie ends albeit there are people working on it and he is better and learning....His genius is in a different field entirely which is art and that is a fact as far as children with learning disorders are concerned...they almost always are exceptionally brilliant in a particular vocation...So TZP was actually rather realistic...

Re: International awards
by Parth Mehta on Oct 28, 2008 10:32 PM
Ramen, Jatin Lalit were not average, they were excellent and were considered best music directors at that time. A R Rahman is the boss though so I am not comparing them with Rahman. But then Rahman have got so many awards for his master creations. Jatin Lalit never got a single award for their beautiful creations. DDLJ, Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Khamoshi, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Raaju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Ghulam, Sarfarosh, Raju Chacha, Sangharsh, Khiladi, Mohabbatein, Khoobsurat, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Humtum, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Dil Kya Kare, Fanaa, Vaastav, Yes Boss, Yaara Dildaara, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai and many more to go and you call them average. Look at the number of hit songs, these movies have. If you call them average, then I must say you don't have a good taste for music. I have seen Amelie and No Man's Land and I am not comparing the hollywood movies with bollywood movies. Hollywood movies are good but not all of them like Bollywood. Agreed that Hollywood makes better movies than bollywood but still TZP or Black were no longer pathetic. May be it is for a person like you but not for the rest of us as you can see in the answers here.

Oscar means business sense....Don't forget that film is an "Industry"...
& getting an Oscar will open the door to western markets....Just like it did for the chinese...

Secondly it is not wise to live in denial mode...Bollywood films have reached the abyss of Cliche & plagiarism...
