The Protesters should see the movie first before protesting
by nischal maniar on Apr 08, 2008 11:29 PM  | Hide replies

Protesters should ask for a special screening for them. Understand the film and its motive and if they find any offense against hinduism then go ahead with the protests otherwise stay quiet.
I agree with Mr chopra that protesting every now and then is just creating a bad impression about hindu religion .. its showing them as insecure about their own religion.

so did lot of people when mohammad's cartoons were in european newspapers, when church went panic over holy grail books, when jews faced holocaust and now when tibet is in human rights crisis. sure all religious teachings say enjoy without hurting anyone - but you made it clear that your enjoyment is cheap.

See ? That proves religions and gods are man's creation. Indeed even the vedas have doubts about gods existence. "Who know whence the Universe came into being ? Even the gods came after Creation"

Hindusium is NOT a religon, its a way of life.
by ashok kumar on Apr 08, 2008 10:03 PM  | Hide replies

We have had multiple movies and comedies on Jesus Christ and comediens on all shows making fun of Jesus Christ, that does not mean church going people have any less faith in Chirstainity. People of the world lighten up or we are ALL going to become Talibans. Muslims are the "cult" that has to watched, they can't even handle a cartoon. Deepak Chopra may have made a lot of money, but if the Hindus were to look carefully he is only recylying repacking Baghvat Gita in laymans terms so is Wayne Dywer.
Have a good laugh. God is great and does have a sense of humor-look around you. Hindusium could not be changed by 200 years of Moghuls or 200 years of conolism, what makes Zed think a simple movie can do it? Two weeks after new realses The Guru the movie will be forgotten, mot THE GURU I am a devotee of.
Kudos to Mike, Deepak and Pelosi on Tibet.

You are right. Right now some Hindus who are not confident about themselves are touchy about it. It may have something to do with HIndu bashing that is going on for decades by the west. Hindus have to get over it.

An intelligent observation. I say there should be more comic films on all religions which should ridicule the bizzare and often dangerously stupid dogmas of all religions.

I think it is time liberal and intellectual oriented hindus come together to present their perspective against the increasingly vulgar presentation of the religion by the likes of togadia modi , their fans in US etc. They might end up destroying whatever good is left of religion in the long run.
There is no need to be afraid of these fundies, and we desperately need to bring the balance back in hindu society.

If I spit on the face of Deepak Chopra...
by secret secret on Apr 08, 2008 05:19 PM  | Hide replies

...will he take it lying down? If he has enough of a self-concept, how would a spit on his face change it in any way?

Hinduism, Hindu principles and the Hindu way of life are things important to Hindus, and an attack on them is an attack on Hindus' self-respect, just as a spit on his face is an attack on Deepak Chopra's.

If you make fun of something I hold in high esteem and consider part of me, you are hurting me. Just like you would get upset by someone spitting on your face, which is part of you.

Create your own religion and make fun of it. Don't make fun of mine since it comes readymade and offers you a way to use your talent to make some money.

dude, u r comparing a physical act with an emotional act. Is Hinduism an "exclusive" part of yourself as is your face..???!!! By the same token 9that hinduism is part of hindus) deepak chopra has every right to make fun of "his own part" of hinduism, right?? religions are in the public domain, so anyone shd be able to interpre it the way they want. if you have the right to look at it in a sacred way, others have their rights to look at in a comic way as well. If you get hurt, its actually your problem - that you are so week. Dont confuse things that are in the public domain with your private things.

Nanda, either u havent read my message completely or u havent understood what I've written. You are again mixing up private people with public stuff, like Secret. Fathers and mothers and sisters (sure somebody will bring up sisters soon!) are real persons in blood and flesh and they are private people. But religions and Gods arent like that. they are in the public domain and open to interpretations. its really a shame that though Hinduism is one of the most sensible religions which is open to multiple interpretations failed to educate its people on the intricacies of Hinduism and allowed even Hindus to turn into clones of followers of those rigid Abrahamic religions. Pitty, real pitty. read dtr's message as well, hope atleast that will make you understand a thing or two.

RE:If I spit on the face of Deepak Chopra...

No, I am not comparing a physical act with an emotional act. Both acts are emotional acts. Spitting on someone's face is an attack on the person's self-respect. And so is insulting my faith. You can't say on behalf of me that insulting my faith causes lesser hurt than being spat upon.

I was referring to these lines by chopra:

"I would say your faith is so weak that a comedy can offend you. I would then tell them, Your faith is not faith; it's a cover up for insecurity."

That's exactly the case with a person who responds violently upon being spat upon. Let me paraphrase that:

"I would say your self-concept is so weak that a spit can offend you. I would then tell them, your self-concept is not really evolved; it's full of insecurity."

Indeed, people with a really evolved self-concept, like yogis, would not respond when spat upon. For, nothing inside them changes by a spit on their faces. For the rest of us, there's anger and hurt. That is because we equate our face with ourselves, which a yogi would not do.

If Deepak Chopra doesn't have the most evolved self-concept, who is he to tell me I do not have the most evolved faith? If I cannot define evolved self-concept for him, how can he define evolved faith to me?

Hinduism is indeed in the public domain - which is why you can't insult it. Will Deepak Chopra make fun of the national flag? His argument above holds true there too. Let him tell the legal apparatus as it comes to lynch him that it is insecure.

When I say physical, I mean it being personally involving a private person such as you. Religion definitely isnt only "your part". Religion and Gods are about %u201Cfaith%u201D and its up to the individual to believe in it or not, to keep it sacred to them or to make fun of. Its like a book open to interpretations. You cant hold the right to decide how it HAS to be interpreted. If you want to treat religion sacred, YOU treat it that way but dont expect others to treat it the same way. If you get hurt by others%u2019 point of view over a thing thats in the public domain, like religion, its your problem. Why is it that saying something against God or religion is always considered to be an "insult" or hurt..?? Then, for an atheist, saying that God exists can also be said to be an insult to his intelligence? Thing is this. You have your faith. Well, follow it. But don%u2019t force others also to do the same. These guys taking movies arent forcing you to watch. If they do that they sure need a slap on their face. They are taking it for those who think like them. Not for you. There is no end to this "getting hurt" business. Tomorrow one will say I believe in something like Russel%u2019s tea pot and no one shd say anything against it. Or that somebody may say a book written by some xyz is sacred to us and no one shd crirticise that. Infact such things are already happening in India with respect to some caste based symbols. Of late, the number of people who "get hurt" seem to be in

..increasing exponentially and that definitely isn%u2019t a good thing. Its %u2018cos of the closed/rigid nature of the church, Europe had thrown religion into dustbin. Its %u2018cos of the openness of Hinduism it survived sustained attacks on it. VHP brand of talibnised Hinduism is a sure fire way to make Hinduism extinct.
And, its precisely this kind of closed attitude towards diff points of view which keeps India in a poor shape eg., politicians not tolerating any criticism. And one is always supposed to nod with the mass, else you end up %u201Churting%u201D them!

Secret,
Please speak for yourself. Not all Hindus interpret Hinduism in the same way. If they do, then there wouldn't be any conflicts within Hinduism. Religions and faith are supposed to be personal. You interpret the way you want it, and keep it yourself. If you do that, no one and nothing can hurt you.

I am speaking for myself. I am telling people not to make fun of something I hold sacred. Make fun of something you created yourself, not the faith of other people who owe you nothing and who do you no harm.

Sure, I will keep my religion and faith personal and to myself. I just want Deepak Chopra and Mike Myers to do the same, too. Let them not communicate their points of view about my religion and faith to anyone.

And I know that if I do not protest and nobody else protests either, every Tom, Dick and Harry will start lampooning Hinduism from tomorrow, give an inferiority complex to several followers of this and the following generations who have lesser conviction, and make one of the most tolerant, rich and evolved religions go extinct.

Be and let me be.

Dr. Chopra, became a multi-millionaire, essentially, giving a good summary of Hindu thoughts and Sastras to Hollywood actors and other rich Americans. Now, perhaps, the old market has shrunk. He is clearly trying something new. Why not use Hinduism and Hindu practices again, but in a new way. Money is the ultimate goal. I hope his customers realise that Dr. Chopra is not to be mistaken for a Yogi!!!
