No wonder Bollywood makes frothy, sugar sweet movies. Very few people in India want to watch realistic, dark and meaningful cinema. The NRI's like such movies from their comfortable pads but the ordinary Indian wants an escape from the drudgery of life and who can blame him!
i hv seen namesake. though it's a good movie, it isnt so gr8 to deserve 3 times viewing!! why does media hype some of the critically acclaimed films so much? last yr it was omakara ( the gaalis got on my nerves, was such a slow nd boring movie). this yr its namesake.

why is regional parochialism coming in to the discussion here - Yes it was written by a Bengalee who is an acclaimed author on her own right - is that a crime? Yes the movies's tory centerd around a Bengalee immigrant family - is that a crime? or is it something deeper here - some folks are unnecessarily jealous - why! In that case we have to disregard any indian/international stalwarts with bong name like Vivekananda, Vidyasagar, Rammohan, Rabindranath, Satyajit, Subhas Bose , Amartya Sen, Satyen Bose, Jagadish Bose, Meghnad Saha, Mahalanobis, Ganesh Payne, Bikas Bhattacharya, Kishore Kumar, Ravishankar, Allauddin Khan, RD/SD Burman, Manna Dey, hemant Kumar and list can go on and on ...

I am from South India. I loved the movie. May be the movie was slow and I thought the movie ended at a couple fo places. But it is still worth watch it. If u r a new immigrant and did not got thru these, you may not understand it. There is nothing this film is a bengali immigrant film.

Vikas, it is worth the money frame for frame. I am sure some NRI's may be identifying themselves in certain parts of the movie - the issues that addresses both the young and the old. It is shown as it is with no pretentions whatsoever

While I did not consider it to be a great movie at all as a lot of people are claiming it to be including the author of this article, i thought it was sweet and sensitive albeit a little scratchy at times. But I think we should all see and support it. Also, I agree if we can go and see KANK then this is a must see.
Apropos my earlier post, rediff must have a certain bulwark against self centred postures. The hype for this movie is akin to the hype regarding our World Class Cricketers. Live in the real world and not in an esoteric ambience.
