Swami : Movie Review 08th June 2007 21.34 IST By Aparajita Ghosh
Swami is a very unlikely directorial debut by choreographer Ganesh Acharya. One would have expected song and dance in the film. But %u2018Swami%u2019 is far far from Bollywood stereotype.
The movie is a very simple and touching tale of a middle-class man, his wife and their son. Apparently, Acharya seems not the least besotted with the gloss and glitz of commercial cinema. Rather he believes in tapping the emotive appeal of the medium.
Acharya opts for non-flashy starcast: Manoj Bajpai , Juhi Chawla and child artiste Siddharth. And he tells his story in a very simplistic and straightforward way. The film%u2019s story mostly moves in a linear direction. Songs are played only in the background and the cinematography is non-stylistic.
The movie begins with Amitabh Bachchan %u2019s voiceover introducing the characters.
Swami (Manoj Bajpai) is a simple, humble and compassionate man married to Radha (Juhi Chawla). They live in a small home in a South Indian village. Though they are poor, the husband and wife share the hardships and little joys of their lives together.
Swami has a desire to buy a rocking chair. He has had this longing ever since his childhood when he was slapped and scorned for sitting on a rocking chair that belonged to someone else.
This rocking chair is used as a metaphor for Swami%u2019s dreams and unfulfilled desires.

Hello Aarkay,
If you compare the reviews from Tanveer and Aparajitha, you will know what I mean :). One example is the use of the words 'One Dimensional' quoted by Tanveer and 'Unidimensional' by Aparajitha.. I can go and on but will leave it for your judgment. Sam
the songs of Swami are very melodious...Chitra and Hariharan voices are so chweet...so soothing to hear subrabhadhm in Chitra's voice...this is definitely a different kind of album compared to the rest...we need more such melodies...

Movie reviews by people like bookwala over here are passe.Any Karan johar mahalovestory gets a minimum of 3 to 4 star rating and a simple sweet movie which connects with the middle class man,THE PUBLIC of India gets a two star.I think it is high time that movies not be judged based on the profiles of actors and directors alone.Be a bit more genuine guys.
